When to Call the Pros: Know Your Limits on DIY Electrical Work

Changing a light bulb is hardly a complex DIY task but when the electrical jobs become more complex there will come a point when you have to consider employing the services of a qualified professional.

It is not just a matter of competency when it comes to doing your own electrical work as there is also the issue of meeting building codes and regulations, so here is a look at how to tell when it’s time hire an electrician.

It is never worth gambling with your safety

The bottom line when it comes to electrical work is that there is a tipping point where you simply can’t afford to take risks and put the safety of the occupants and the property itself at risk.

There are several key electrical issues that are best left to a professional and if any of the following scenarios are what you are facing, think carefully about whether you want to risk attempting a DIY job.

Wiring not up to standard

If you are having problems with the wiring in your home and your inspection reveals that sections of wiring have become damaged or showing signs of age, you will probably have to call an electrician rather than try to replace parts of the wiring yourself.

The fundamental reason for this is not just a lack of professional knowledge that you might have, but more to the point,  the fact that building codes will require you to get the wiring work signed off as meeting current standards.

You could mix and match with your approach and acquire the electrical items you need when you check these out, before getting a professional in to carry out the installation work on your behalf.

Signs of severe damage

Even more serious than an aged wiring problem is the sound and smells associated with a dangerous electrical problem.

Any noticeable buzzing, sparking or smell of burning is cause for alarm and if these are left unchecked for even a short period of time you are putting yourself at risk of electrocution or even a fire.

These particular issues need to be addressed urgently and repairs carried out by a professional.

When your circuit breaker is telling you something

The circuit breakers in your home are designed as a safety mechanism to protect you when your electrical system becomes overloaded for some reason, so if the system is tripping on a regular basis that could be a sign of an underlying problem.

If your electrical system is not able to cope with the demands placed on it and the breaker keeps tripping you need to arrange to find out why that is happening.

The best course of action would be to call in an electrician so that you can get a professional evaluation of the condition of your wiring system and what needs to be done to make it safer and stop the circuit breaker from being called into action so often.

There are plenty of general DIY tasks you can happily tackle without calling in outside help but when it comes to a number of electrical issues, it’s best to know your limits and call in a professional.

Less of the Stress: Finding Ways to Relax on a Business Trip

It is more than likely that you will have a hefty work schedule to keep up with on your travels but if you don’t find a way to lessen the stress and unwind when your work is done, it could have implications for your health.

Here are some pointers on how to zone out of business mode for a short period and calm your mind, including why mindfulness is proving so popular,

Learning how to train your mind to be calm

The odds are fairly high that something is likely to spoil your plans or your mood while you are away on a business trip, so the trick is to anticipate potential issues and prepare your mind to cope with whatever curveball comes your way.

Practicing mindfulness is all about focusing on the positives and staying in the moment rather than getting stressed and worrying about what lies ahead.

There are some easy and effective mindfulness techniques you can learn with ease and they could really help you to deal with any problems more easily and without sending your stress levels through the roof.

Pick a hotel with good amenities

If you can manage to pick a hotel that offers opportunities for relaxation with a quick dip in the pool or hot tub, or where you could book a treatment to help you de-stress, this can help you switch off when you finish your schedule for the day.

A hotel like the Marriott Hutchinson Island is one example, where you can take advantage of the various amenities in order to allow any stress from the day melt away.

Plan in advance before you get there which leisure activities facilities you might like to use and check whether you need to book before you get there so that you have something relaxing included on your schedule.

Get socializing

Going out for a drink with work colleagues or prospective clients is different to going out with a friend or acquaintance who has no business connection with you.

If you are in an area where you have a friend you don’t see very often it is the perfect chance to meet up with a someone who isn’t going to talk business and allow yourself to switch off with some relaxing socializing.

Don’t overload yourself

Another winning strategy that can help you reduce your stress levels while you are working away is to try and get as much work as possible done before you go.

If you have a presentation to hone or a proposal to put together for your scheduled meetings on your trip, it is a no-brainer to use dead airline time and try and do what you can before you even set off on your journey.

If you leave everything to the night before or the last minute in the hotel room, you are adding to your stress levels and putting more pressure on yourself with such stringent time constraints.

We could all do with less stress in our life so take some positive steps to improve your chances of relaxing between meetings on your next business trip.

Behind the Scenes at Dent Schoolhouse & Giveaway

Anyone who knows me personally knows I am a bit of a chicken when it comes to haunted houses (or even horror movies). The few that I have went to, something crazy always happens – like losing my shoe as we are running away only to come back with a scary guy holding a chainsaw standing over it (true story) or bumping into my friend who said my name, which in case caused the entire scary cast to whisper, yell or scream my name the entire rest of the haunted house!

Yikes!!

So I was intrigued when I found out that I was going to have the opportunity to get a behind the scenes tour of the Dent Schoolhouse – LIGHTS ON – courtesy of Dent Schoolhouse and Dunkin’ Donuts. Especially since it’s rumored that the old school house, is in fact, haunted!

So here’s the story – The Dent Schoolhouse actually used to be a real school back in the day and rumor has it that school children started to go missing back in the 40’s & 50’s, and that Charlie, the school janitor, was responsible. In fact, it is said that he had the rotting bodies of murdered students in gruesome states of disarray in the basement!

Now no one can say either way if this is true or not, but the school did close down in the 50’s and was never opened again, until the Boy Scouts took over to open the house as a haunt. It’s now been a haunted house for 20 years, with visitors from all across country!

I have to say, going into the basement of a haunted schoolhouse, even with the lights on, was a bit frightening to me. Of course I was at the back of the line, so I kept waiting for someone to jump at me or touch me (which thankfully didn’t happen) but I just might have been on edge a bit while getting the tour.

In keeping with the authenticity of the early decade schoolhouse, all the artifacts are in fact from that era. Also most all the props, masks, and scary bloodbaths are also made in house by the staff at Dent.

Each year at least 1/3 of the house gets ‘revamped’ so that each year you get a new experience! Take the skull room for example; the skulls in the room- were legit, hand painted one-by-one by the staff. Each was painstakingly put on the wall; hours and hours went into the skull room alone! (In my opinion, it was one of the most impressive!)

The Dent Schoolhouse is open late September, through the first weekend in November. They have their daytime ghost tours on Wednesday (you must buy your tickets online prior to visiting for the ghost tour, because they do sell out fast!)
The haunt is opened Thursday – Sunday, and of course Friday & Saturday is when you will have the longest wait. (Don’t worry – they have plenty of scary ways to keep you on your toes while you are waiting).

Thursday & Sunday – 7:30 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Friday & Saturday – 7:30 p.m. – 12 a.m.

LIGHTS ON TOUR – kind of what I experienced, but for the kids =) Introduce your kids to the haunted house with the lights on, and no actors. Some friendly ghouls will be passing out candy and treats, and it can make for a fun family experience.

November 3rd & 4th is the LIGHTS OUT WEEKEND which is where there are NO LIGHTS on throughout the entire visit, and you can even purchase a TOUCH pass which gives the staff permission to TOUCH YOU through the visit. The thought alone gives me nightmares, but some really seem to enjoy it! These sell out quick as well, so make sure you purchase your tickets in advance.

You can get discounted tickets at your local Dunkin’ Donuts, Costco and other retailers (just ask!)
Dent is also a CASH ONLY facility, so make sure to stop at the bank on the way – if not, there is an ATM on property.

They have a concession stand for you to get treats and drinks while you wait (which includes my favorite, Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee) as well as a gift shop!

Dent was selected as one of the official top scariest haunted houses & attractions by America Haunts and rated one of the world’s scariest haunts by Haunt World last year. You can get t-shirts, keychains, and more to show that you survived Dent Schoolhouse!

Now it’s time to get your scare on! Enter to win 2 tickets to experience Dent Schoolhouse for yourself! Just enter in the rafflecopter below:

3 Ways to Take Care of Your Body

Humans are not immortal. This is a fact everyone has to accept. But if you take care of your body you’re more likely to live a longer and a happier life compared to someone who doesn’t. Body care is quite as easy as it is hard. It’s simple to adopt a good body care program, making it possible to lead a more productive and fulfilling life. Yet it’s difficult to end the old habits and to adjust to new ones. Your body and brain are intertwined. Thus, you need to have a healthy mind and body to be at peace. Here are ways to achieve a healthy body.

  1. Take a Break

Life is a surge, and the champ gets the present.  When you are a professional working class individual, life is riotous. Yet, it’s this everyday rush that harms your body. It’s not astonishing that most people laugh at the recommendation that they should kick it back just a little bit. There’s so much to be done and so little time to do it. But if you don’t give your body as much rest as it needs to ultimately work, the body will, in the long run, breakdown. You need to slow down for your body. Take time to visit a spa or go to body details and have your body pampered and rejuvenated.

  1. Eat Healthy and Exercise

We’re urged to always be wary of what we eat these days.  Especially with current circumstances considering the unhealthy junk food we eat. Food is fuel, and we require it to work ideally. Eating well means giving your body what it needs to improve its functions. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Include a piece of fruit in your meal, or forego coffee for a glass of water. Make sure to at least drink 8 glasses of water in a day to keep your body hydrated. Don’t forget to exercise. A little gym time, morning workouts, and sometimes forfeit the car for treks. The exercise will make you feel energized and full of life.

  1. Listen to your body

Our bodies have a way of communicating with us. Whenever something is wrong with the body, it communicates through pain or other symptoms. Joint aches, stomach aches, migraines, name them. The worst part is that, however much our bodies tell us that something is wrong, we assume that it’s not as long as it’s not unbearable. These pains, however insignificant, need to be dealt with. Early treatment is the only way to avoid long-term implications of something that might not be as painful as it is serious.

A serene personality means nothing without a sound body to complement it. So take 60 minutes—yes 60 minutes! — out of your day, a couple of times each week to care for it. Rest, eat, meditate or get a back rub, whatever it takes to make you feel relaxed. Remember without a healthy body nothing else is possible in life. So in whatever you do keep your health first over everything.
