Slimfast® 14-Day Challenge Results

So a few weeks ago I mentioned  I was going to start the Slimfast 14-Day Challenge in hopes to kick start my weight loss goals for the new year.

For 2 weeks I used SlimFast shakes for breakfast, and the SlimFast Meal Replacement Bars for lunch and ate a sensible dinner.

The Meal Replacement Bars were very filling – with 8 grams of protein the bars helped fuel my day, and get me to dinner without feeling hungry.

The SlimFast shakes were a great replacement for a big breakfast. Though the drinks were a bit thick tasting to drink, a friend of mine recommended adding a banana and almond milk to a frozen shake, which made it especially delicious and filling.

#SlimFastChallenge

I am excited to announce I lost 7 POUNDS during the 14-Day Slimfast® Challenge!

Fitness Friday: Revive Your New Years Resolutions

So it’s 17 days into the new year, and you’ve already deleted -thrown out – erased, all your resolutions so no one see’s how you failed, right? At least that’s what the majority of people have done by now who have made new years resolutions. They say only a mere 8% of people actually achieve their goals by December 31st. Ouch!

Want to pick yourself back up and make it to that 8%? Take these simple steps:

1. Make a realistic goal
I know we’ve all done it – “I am going to lose 100 lbs by summer”, or “I will run a marathon this year”, when we haven’t ran up the stairs since we were kids. Though these all seem attainable if you work hard enough, they aren’t realistic. Set up goals that you can achieve in shorter time periods. Such as lose 5 lbs by March, then lose another 10 lbs by June. Walk a 5k in April, run a 5k in August. You will motivate yourself to continue when you’re able to “CHECK” that goal off your list!

2.Don’t Be Upset by Setbacks
No one is perfect – and no matter how hard you try, sometimes you are going to run into things that set you back from your goal. Some are out of your control, such as sickness, but others , like overeating /binging, or being too lazy/busy are mistakes we all make. I know that I used to get soo upset at myself for messing up at lunch time (company lunch, what are you gonna’ do?) that I continued to eat horrid the rest of the day. Sometimes even the rest of the week with the mentality that “I’ll just start fresh Monday.”  DON’T DO IT! Did you eat those cookies hidden in your desk drawer, or finish off the kids french fries from lunch? Brush it off, and promise yourself you will make better decisions, not tomorrow, but right now.

3. Change one Habit at a Time
Sometimes it’s just too much to go cold turkey when it comes to eating, and throwing yourself into the gym for 2 hours a day is going to burn you out. Take a step back and conquer your first challenge, then move onto your next. Taking your time to change the way you think about or do things will help you maintain the habit or behavior long term. This is why so many of us fail at new years resolutions is because we are overwhelmed with how much we have to change about ourselves.

4. PLAN IT
I can’t say this enough – planning ahead of time and being organized is essential and I believe KEY to making changes and keeping long term results. I am sometimes a ‘fly by the seat of your pants’ kinda girl. (ask my kids!) But I will tell you right now planning and organizing your day, your workouts, your meals will make sticking to your resolutions a piece of cake compared to winging it. Meal plan, go to the grocery ahead of time, schedule your work outs and what your going to do during them. Plan it like you would your work day and you will see success!

5. Find Support
Nothing is fun alone – finding a friend who has the same goals can help keep you accountable and gives you someone to lean on when you feel as if you can’t go on. Blogging is a great way to help find others like you, but if you have too much on your plate you can use great fitness apps, like MyFitnessPal app. (Friend me if you’d like and we can help keep each other accountable, and share some great healthy meals and fun exercises!) Share on Facebook, Twitter, you never know who you might meet that will encourage you to find the strength within to move forward. Some of my closest friends are ones that I’ve never even met in person.

Valentine’s Day Date Night “IN” with K-Y YOURS+Mine #ad

#CBIAS

It seems to be like Valentine’s Day has always been focused on pleasing the female counterpart in a relationship. We want jewelry, chocolates, a nice dinner, champagne, a walk on the beach, candlelight, to be romanced, get the massage instead of give it, and the list goes on. But being in a relationship is so much more then just getting what we want – we need to show our men how much we appreciate and love them.

Don’t get me wrong – I still want to be romanced, I love to be treated like a queen (who doesn’t?!) But how many times do you really give your man what he wants and needs? How many Valentine’s Days, Sweetest Days, do you put the focus on him?

#KYdatenight #ad #cbias #valentines #forhim

So this Valentine’s Day I have plans to make this about him, (at least for the most part). So for Valentine’s Day 2014 – here’s what I have planned.

#KYdatenight

  • For this date night we are staying “IN” – With my husband being on the road over 261 days a year, he’s not one for going out much. Though we will go out to dinner or a movie, he prefers to stay home because well, he just never gets to. So the kids will be at their grandparents, and we will have the house to ourselves.
  • No grilled fish, or nice garden salads for my guy! He loves a good home cooked meal, so I have a plan to make one of his favorites, my homemade enchiladas  (the great thing is I can make them low fat/low cal for me, and the ‘full fat/full taste’ for him!)
  • One thing he loves to do that he hasn’t had time to do is play video games. When we first got together Call of Duty was forever playing on our Wii. I would clean up dinner, get my work out done and he’d still be playing. With his job he doesn’t have time for these luxuries, so I have a surprise for him – I purchased him the new Call of Duty game and I’m going to play with him (yes I’m an awesome wife)
  • To finish off our perfect night -and this is where the ‘don’t forget me’ comes in- I ordered some K-Y Yours+Mine from Walmart.com (Though I have 3 kids, I’m still a bit funny about going to the store to buy these things. LOVE that I can order it online and have it delivered right to my door! No red cheeks for me!)
If you haven’t tried the K-Y YOURS+Mine, you need to. Here’s a bit of an idea of what it can do for him…and you:

 Sounds great right?

This will be a perfect end for both of us, after a perfect evening just for him. I’m sure this will be a Valentine’s Day he will never forget!

Chronic Back Pain Keeps Many Sufferers Home Bound

Back pain affects thousands of people each year and typically can be experienced more frequently as we get older. Chronic back pain is another story. It can be more than simply uncomfortable and can lead to major life limitations that can leave some sufferers completely unable to leave their house, much less work for a living. When this is the case, they may want to consider applying for Social Security disability benefits.

Chronic back pain can stem from a variety of causes, including injury, disease, infection, or some combination. These can cause a searing or stabbing pain and numbness when the back is moved. Other symptoms that can be debilitating to the sufferer and leave them home-bound include an aching or stiffness along the spine, neck pain, or back pain that radiates to the buttocks and legs. These can be accompanied by problems urinating, weakness in the arms or legs, or problems controlling the bowels.

The pain is considered chronic if it does not improve within six weeks and is such that it limits a person’s ability to perform normal daily activities. The list of limitations included to qualify for social security disability are difficulty walking, sitting, standing, lifting, reaching, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

These limits, though, can lead to others that may or may not be self-imposed. People with chronic back pain may feel they cannot participate in social activities. Simply getting into and out of a car could be more than they can handle. Driving, with the need to grip and turn the wheel, work the pedals by lifting the feet, and move the head from side to side, may seem impossible.

Exiting the house itself requires a series of movements that others not suffering chronic back pain think nothing about: standing from a chair, walking to the closet and extending the arms to shrug into a coat, climbing or descending stairs. There is little chance a sufferer of chronic back pain could grab a bus at the corner or handle the curbing to walk any distance.

The social security disability process will take into account other factors in a person’s daily routine, including the location of the pain and its duration, the types of medication needed to relieve or cope with the pain, or any treatment they are receiving. There may be other treatments, such as lying flat for a period of time, that the person uses to help with their pain.

Medications needed to alleviate pain can be enough on its own to limit a person’s ability or willingness to leave the house. Muscle relaxants can be sedating and cause extreme drowsiness. A narcotics or opioid is often prescribed to those who have had a long-term disability or have had back surgery. In fact, as many as 70 percent of patients with back pain have receive such a prescription. These medications, however, have side effects including drowsiness, constipation, and allergic reactions, such as hives. All these side effects and the real possibility of addiction can limit a person’s ability to function in the world
