Prom Dresses on a Budget

This year my daughter will attend her first dance – something I am probably more excited about then she is. Since I was home schooled through most of my high school career I didn’t have the opportunity to get all dressed up and dolled up and got to dance with my friends. So being able to experience this with my daughter is something I have dreamed about since she was little. Believe it or not, she hates to shop…but loves getting new clothes (go figure). So shopping online is always her go-to when she needs an outfit or dress for a special occasion. It’s easy to find what you are looking for online versus in store, plus I do agree avoiding crowded malls and shopping centers is a plus! With JenJenHouse, there are so many beautiful prom dress selections for all sizes!  In addition to that, each dress is available in a wide variety of colors, meaning the likelihood that someone else will have the same dress is significantly diminished. This was my first pick for her – I love the one shoulder strap, the color, the length (not too short) and the neckline (no cleavage!) I love her in hot pink with her dark blonde hair and blue eyes, but she had other ideas. The nice thing about it is you can choose a style of dress and pick from many different colors! I still think I may pin this dress for my other daughter in a few years. It’s just too cute and only $129,99 which is a great deal on a prom dress!

But we finally found the perfect dress! Yellow is definitely her color ( again with the blue eyes, and she has the best skin – yes I am jealous) I can’t wait to see her in it! Quite a bargain at $128.99

OxiClean Covers it All – dishes, laundry and more!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for OxiClean. I received three product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

I am well into my early ‘spring’ cleaning and trying to get my house into tip top shape. We have lots of plans to keep busy this Spring/Summer so I want to make sure my house is in running order before the chaos begin. Soccer, cheer, trips to visit family across the country, and maybe even some camping trips where we shoot the compound bow. I am doing my best to get my Spring cleaning done so I can start my weekly routine list and keeping my house clean and laundry done won’t seem like such a overwhelming impossible task. So when I was offered the opportunity to review some new cleaning products, I was super excited especially since they are made by the ever so clever OxiClean! I started using original OxiClean with my laundry; anytime I needed to get out a tough stain, or even remove deodorant marks from white or black t-shirts (especially tank tops).  I would have a bucket of water, add 2 cups of OxiClean and let the shirts soak for a day or so. Then I would run it through the wash, and it would come out almost new. All those frustrating stains were gone! Original OxiClean is my go-to product, so when I started to use OxiClean Laundry Detergent, OxiClean Laundry Stain Remover and OxiClean Dish Washer Detergent I was stoked to see what it could do!

OxiClean Dishwasher Detergent 

My poor dishwasher gets more use then almost any other appliance in my house (excluding my washer!) Though I’ve worked with my kids on re-using cups , I still manage to have a sink full of dishes waiting to be put in the dishwasher before I even start dinner. I’ve tried many different dishwasher detergents, some work better then others, but almost all of my bigger messier dishes, have had to be put through a second time, or washed by hand to get it completely clean and streak free. I decided to put OxiClean Dishwasher Detergent to the test – I made my homemade cheesy yummy enchiladas. Normally I let the pan soak over night (between the sauce and the cheese it’s a mess!) But this time I went ahead and put it right in the dishwasher along with our plates and cups. I was pleasantly surprised to see that not only had the detergent gotten my baking pan clean, but it was also shiny! (BONUS POINT for OxiClean!) I’ve used it for every load for the past week, and it continues to hold up to it’s reputation.

OxiClean Laundry Stain Remover “White Revive”

I will admit – my kids are messy. Like I-know-what-they-had-for-lunch-at-school kind of messy. My heart stops a bit when I see one of the kids get off the bus with a big spot on their shirt from lunch, or even worse from painting or doing something in Art class. I’ve had to throw out more shirts and pants then I care to admit before I discovered OxiClean. Oxiclean got out grass stains from polyester baseball pants, kool-aid from dresses, blood from a boo-boo, or even grease from a burger! Trying out the “White Revive” made me a bit leery at first; I’ve used other ‘white’ only products, and it left my shirts looking a bit yellowish/rusty almost. But I have to admit that the White Revive really did remove the stains, and left my shirt looking new.

OxiClean Laundry Detergent 

I have used Arm & Hammer with OxiClean on my clothes for nearly a year; since I know OxiClean can get the job done I’ve not wavered to other products very often. But having a laundry detergent made specifically by OxiClean for my laundry got me excited! I am embarrassed to admit I am not the best at sorting laundry – with sometimes doing up to 6 peoples laundry, it’s a job that is never done – and my sorting consist of what we need for school/work/practice tomorrow vs darks, whites, and colors and I have on occasion threw in a new pair of jeans with some lighter colored clothes that turned a different shade! So my laundry detergent has to be good! I did a few loads just like normal with the new OxiClean detergent, and I was happy with all the crusty food stains, pens and marker stains, as well as mud were all washed out on the first wash! That alone is exciting to me, because there are often times that some items get put back through the wash again. Yet another OxiClean product that doesn’t disappoint.

Easy Peasy Cheesy Chicken Monterey with Knorr Rice

If it’s one thing I love, it’s an EASY recipe. When I find an easy and delicious recipe is when it goes into my meal rotations, and that’s exactly what I found in the Knorr Rice Cheesy Chicken Monterey. It’s fast, affordable and delish! The prep and cook time is only about 20 minutes – that’s what I call a quick meal!

My family loves Knorr Rice as a side – in fact, I usually have to make at least 2 bags of rice, if not 3 at dinner time. So when I served them a main dish with Knorr Rice I knew it was going to be a hit.  I added a bit of pepper to mine and my husband’s to kick it up a knotch, but the kids don’t really like the extra spice. It’s easy to add (or leave out) whatever to appease your families palate.

INGREDIENTS
1 package Knorr® Rice Sides™ – Chicken flavor
1 can (11 oz.) corn, drained
1 can (11 oz.) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (4 oz.) green chilies, undrained
1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
DIRECTIONS
Prepare Knorr® Rice Sides™ – Chicken flavor according to package directions. Stir in corn, beans and chilies.
Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and cook chicken, stirring frequently, until chicken is thoroughly cooked, about 4 minutes.
Arrange Rice mixture on serving platter, then top with chicken and cheese.
Tip: Leftovers? For a great next day lunch, make Cheesy Chicken Monterey Burritos by wrapping the recipe in tortillas. Cost per recipe*: $11.28 Cost per serving*: $2.82 *Based on average retail prices at national supermarkets.

The Benefits and Uses of Coconut Oil

For years I ran myself and my kids to the doctor and used medications and prescriptions for the illnesses in our family, and only recently have I discovered the benefits and uses of more natural remedies.
As I’ve started my research it amazes me how many natural products can be used for so many ailments. I’ve complied a list of great uses for coconut oil, but please remember I am not a medical professional and though I do believe the oil can help with many ailments, you should consult your doctor with any health issues.

Virgin coconut oil is composed of medium-chain-length fatty acids, or triglycerides MCTs, which are shown to have many health benefits, including raising the body’s metabolism, and acting as an antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial agent.”

Give Your Hair Shine
Run a small bit through your wet hair  to get a great smooth shine.

Moisturize Your Skin
From dry feet and hands to sun- kissed skin, coconut oil is a great way to re nourish your skin without heavy scented lotions. One little dab and rubbed in will do the trick.

Remove Your Makeup
Go natural -put some coconut oil on a cloth and wash off your make-up. Rinse with warm water. You skin will be clean and soft.

Remove Sun/Age Spots
Gently rub the coconut oil on your sun/age spots, and watch them fade away.

Baking/Cooking
Use it as a substitute for shortening, butter, or other types of oil, and get a sweeter, lighter tasting dessert. In cooking it’s a great oil with a high smoke point. It’s also a dairy free replacement to butter!
Add To Sweet Beverages
It’s easy to bring a kick of coconut to hot chocolate or fruit smoothies. It’s also great in coffee! (remember if you are adding to a cold beverage, you need to heat up the liquid and melt it before adding to your drink!).

Leather Shoe Cleaner
Make sure your boots remain made for walking by rubbing them down with a dab of coconut oil to keep them clean and soften the leather.

Remove Stickers From Merchandise
Darn you, discount stores! Sticky labels and price tags are easy to remove with coconut oil. Just mix with some baking soda, spread it on the sticky area, leave for 10 minutes, and all evidence of your bargain will rub right off.

Season Cast-Iron Frying Pans
Cast iron needs maintenance to ensure foods don’t stick, and coconut oil makes a great non-sticking agent to keep your pan slick.

Canker Sore Remedy
If your diet consists primarily of fresh pineapple and sour soothers, one of the (likely many) health issues you’ve endured is the dreaded canker sore. Coconut oil has been said to speed up the healing process.

Furniture Polish
Some coconut oil and lemon juice is all it takes to bring a beautiful shine to your wood furniture. (Just be sure to test it out on an inconspicuous spot first.)

Toothpaste
Combine coconut oil with baking soda to make your pearly whites shine.

Lip Balm
While coconut oil makes lips shiny and moist on its own,  you can add these items for a added kick – beeswax, shea butter, and colouring.

Help Digestion/Kill Parasites
There is some evidence that coconut oil helps digestion and may even kill intestinal parasites or yeast (see Stockpiling Moms post on Oil Pulling)

Prevent Stretch Marks

Kill Yeast/yeast infections

Topically, to help heal wounds

To Fight Athletes Foot and Fungus 

Can help sooth psoriasis or eczema

Rub coconut oil on the inside of your nose to help alleviate allergy symptoms

Blend a tablespoon into hot tea to help speed recovery from cold or flu

 Can help reduce appearance of varicose veins

 As a natural shave cream and after shave lotion

Can reduce the itch of mosquito bites

It’s anti-inflammatory properties can help lessen arthritis

Can help speed weight loss when consumed daily

Can help improve sleep when taken daily

Can be used to speed healing of fungal infections when taken internally and used externally

A tablespoon melted into a cup of warm tea can help sooth a sore throat

To help sooth the itch of chicken pox or poison ivy

Some evidence shows that the beneficial fats in coconut oil can help with depression and anxiety

By itself as a natural deodorant

For pets struggling with skin issues when used externally

Some evidence suggests that the beneficial fats in coconut oil are helpful for those with Autism
