Motherhood Hacks to Help You Keep Your Sanity

Motherhood is one of the busiest jobs you’ll ever have. It is filled with long hours, breaks that are few and far between, and no financial reward. Although it is one of the toughest roles you’ll ever have, it is also one of the most rewarding. Here are some hacks that will save you money, time, and your sanity.
Organize Your Cleaning Supplies
Keep your household cleaners safe and out of reach of the little ones with a shoe organizer that you hang over your door. Be sure to place it over a door in a room that your children can’t get into.
Simplify Feeding Time
Make feeding time simpler by attaching a commando hook to the back of your child’s feeding chair. Instead of having to search frantically for a bib for your child to wear when it is time for them to eat, you can hang a bib onto the hook that is on the back of the chair so that it is easily accessible when you need it.
Organize Art Supplies
Keeping up with all of your child’s crayons and coloring books can be a challenge. Fortunately, if you happen to have an extra dish rack on hand, you can use it to keep all of your child’s art supplies in one place. The portion of the rack that is used for dishes can be used to store your child’s coloring books and the silverware cup is the perfect storage space for your child’s crayons and paint brushes.
Reuse Baby Jars
If you are tired of seeing all of those empty baby jars pile up, why not use them as extra storage containers. They make great spice containers. You can even spruce them up by decorating them so they match your kitchen decor.
Slip Resistant Shoes
Keep your kid from slipping and sliding all over the house in bare feet with slip resistant shoes and socks. Since they can be rather pricy, you can always make your own with a glue gun and some house shoes or socks. Write out your child’s name on the bottom of their slippers and socks. Allow them to dry completely before letting your child wear them.
Wrapping Paper Storage
Do you always seem to end up with a ton of leftover wrapping paper from holidays, birthdays, and special occasions? Here is an easy way for you to store them so they are in great shape for future use. Take an empty tissue or paper towel roll and cut it open right down the middle. Place one around each wrapping paper roll to keep them from unraveling and becoming damaged.
DIY Electrical Covers
If you keep misplacing your plug outlet covers, here is an easy way for you to keep them covered and keep your child safe. Place a band aid or some duct tape over each electrical plug outlet. Even though your electrical outlets will be completely covered, you should still keep a good eye on your child.
Add More Space Into Your Bags
Get more space into your luggage, gym bags, and diaper bags by rolling your clothes first. This creates more space for other essentials that you may need. It also makes it easier for you to pack lighter, which can be a big benefit if you plan on going anywhere by plane.
Stay Healthier
Keep everyone in your family in the best of health by incorporating more healthy foods into your diets. When researching which health foods to add, be sure to check out the Facebook pages of the companies that manufacture them. For example, the Hampton Creek Facebook page has a lot of information about the company, its foods, and charity efforts.
Dry Wash Your Hair
Finding the time to wash your hair can be hard when you constantly have little ones underfoot. Thanks to dry shampoo, you don’t need a lot of time to wash or dry your hair anymore. When you are tired of your hair looking and feeling greasy and dirty, use a little dry shampoo to get it back in shape so you can feel more beautiful and refreshed.
Utilizing these hacks will make it easier for you to enjoy a little bit of freedom and more of the little things that make motherhood such a rewarding role. No matter how old your child is, don’t forget to live, laugh, and breathe often. One day you’ll look up at your child will be looking to you for advice on how to make their jobs as parents easier.

The Gorilla Mom: The Perfect Storm

This weekend as I was scrolling through my Facebook feed, our local news channel had posted that a child fell into the moat at the gorilla exhibit at our local zoo. I was kinda’ in shock.

Now I have been to the Cincinnati Zoo – and this particular exhibit – hundreds of times – when I was a kid, and also as an adult taking my own kids. The exhibit has been set up the way it has since 1978 – even before I was born. Not once in the nearly 38 years has anyone breached it. Until now.

gorilla_zoo

Now before anyone starts hating on me (which I’m sure will happen) remember, I rarely post controversial topics on my blog for good reason; people are mean. Straight up hateful and evil. I try to keep all that as far away from me as possible, life is hard enough you know?

I am sad the gorilla had to be killed. Yes, had to be. A child’s life, heck, any human life is far more valuable than an animals, endangered or not. I hate that the Zoo admins had to even make such a decision. It sucks. It sucks bad. But if that was your child – wouldn’t you want them to make the same decision?? The gorilla could of torn the kid in two with his bare hands, and likely would of if they would of tried to use a tranq dart. The gorilla was also male, which is more of protector than a nurturer like a female gorilla. He was curious –  and dangerous. Again, this whole situation sucks.

Now, as far as how it happened and why – we don’t really know for sure. Like they say there is always 3 sides to every story: Yours, mine and the truth. ..and I’m sure in this case, there’s things we don’t know..but as a Mom, and a frequent visitor of this particular zoo, I am gonna’ give you my opinion: A combination of not-so-great parenting, a breakable barrier, and a curious gorilla made this situation a perfect storm.

I know kids can get away from you in a split second – I’ve lost my son not only once, but twice. Once for about 5 minutes at my daughter’s cheer practice. We were walking down the stairs to leave, (as was everyone else) and my daughter was walking down the stairs next to my son – when we get to the door he was gone!! After a lockdown, and a very shaken stressed out 5 minutes, he was found in the boys locker room. Looks like he decided to follow all the basketball players into the locker room, and he was too small to open the door and get out! Talk about a heart attack! The next time was at my own wedding- he was only 2. Again, he followed someone into the bathroom, and couldn’t open the door – more panic! However, both of these times we were in a ‘safe’ environment. I knew most everyone; there was no immediate danger – but it did happen in a split second, when eyes were averted to something else, when a parent just gets busy, and things happen. Sometimes tragic things. Like the boy climbing into the gorilla moat at the zoo.

Now I do not excuse the Mom from guilt whatsoever – there were rumors she was on her phone, or attending to other kids after her son told her multiple times he was going to climb in with the gorillas. She should have been more diligent;  she should have grabbed his hand and walked him out, screaming kicking and crying – along with her other kids. I’ve been there – I’ve done it.

kids_at_the_zoo
Multiple times my son (and nephew) have tried to climb just on the railing to get a “better look” at the ‘monkeys’. Each and every time we have pulled them off the railings and warned them of the dangers (yes I am the Mom who will tell my not-scared-of-anything son that the gorilla would rip his face off . Harsh? yes. But I know my son. I have to make him aware of dangers because he thinks he’s some sort of superman).

The Zoo is not your backyard or local playground – there are dangers everywhere. From strangers (have you ever seen the amount of abductions done at local ‘family friendly’ locations? Go look), to wild animal exhibits. The Zoo has kept up safety standards, but you have to be aware that this isn’t the place to let them run wild (though there is a KID FRIENDLY PETTING ZOO that you can do just that at).

She screwed up – as we all do. She made a fatal mistake that she will live with the rest of her life. Haven’t you ever had a parent fail moment?! Maybe not to this extreme – but yes, it could happen to any of us if we get distracted enough. I am not defending her, but I am appalled at the amount of people shouting off with her head! The hate that I see on social media is sad. (In fact, another Michelle Gadd who lives in Ohio has gotten a ridiculous amount of ‘hate messages’ on Facebook because of mistaken identity).

Why do we call for her to be investigated, or put to death herself? Her other kids taken away? She screwed up. She should have been more responsible; she should have kept him closer – but she will have to live with this the rest of her life – isn’t that enough punishment??

**I want to add that the Cincinnati Zoo is one of the most awesome zoo’s in the U.S.  They are always continuous improving the exhibits for the safety of all the visitors and the animals – and will be looking into the gorilla exhibit as well.

New Test for Cats & Dogs May Catch Kidney Disease Years Earlier Than Before #AskYourVet

This post is sponsored by Pet Health Network® and the BlogPaws® Pet Influencer Network™. I am being compensated to help create awareness for the importance of the IDEXX SDMA™ kidney screening test for pets, but we only share information we feel is relevant to our readers. Neither Pet Health Network® or IDEXX is responsible for the content of this article.

We’ve talked a lot lately about how our pets are one of the family – that we would do anything to protect them, and keep them with us longer. We take them to the vet for check-ups, (or emergency remove hook from cats mouth surgery..yes, that recently happened to us!) we feed them healthy dog/cat food, we make sure they get enough exercise, we get them their shots, give them heartworm meds, and everything else to keep them healthy and happy.

But sometimes things come up that we weren’t expecting – and sometimes unfortunately, it’s just too late. Things like Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is really common in household pets – 1 in 3 cats, and 1 in 10 dogs will develop some form of kidney disease in their lifetime. In fact, recent studies suggest that kidney disease is even more common, and until recently has been under-recognized.

Fortunately there’s test like the IDEXX SDMA™ which is a kindey function test that helps enable you to diagnose CKD in cats and dogs months or even years earlier than traditional methods.

Know what that means??

It means its possible to intervene earlier – and help effectively manage the kidney disease.

Kidney disease is a leading cause of suffering and death for cats – kind of like what heart disease is for humans; and as a cat ages, the likelihood of developing kidney disease increases. In fact, more than half of cats age 15 and over are afflicted.

Cats are good at hiding their issues – and typically there won’t be any signs of the illness until their kidneys have lost most of their function.

So the IDEXX SDMA™ test is a breakthrough! Being able to detect kidney disease when the cat’s kidney function is still intact is life changing – for you and your pet.

IDEXX SDMA™ gives you and your veterinarian the chance to take action and give your pet the best shot for a healthy, happy, long life even with kidney disease.

Ask your veterinarian for the IDEXX SDMA kidney screening test. It’s available to all veterinarians via IDEXX Reference Laboratories.

No More Dropped Calls – and Great Deals with Verizon Wireless

This is a Fashionista Event and a promotional item was provided to me. Hosts for this event are Still Blonde after all these Years and ModlyChic

Years ago (I know it makes me sound old) I had a no-name carrier for my cell phone provider. It had patchy service, and there was one spot that I always dropped my call. It was always at the corner of the street going into my Mom’s neighborhood – without fail, in fact I had gotten so accustomed to the dropped calls, that I would warn the person I was talking to that I’d have to call them back as soon as I got close to her neighborhood (definitely wasn’t cool when it was a work call!)

me_on_phone

Then the time I went to visit my in-laws in Maine. They live way way out there – the most North Eastern part of the United States. I had absolutely NO service at all. Do you know how frustrating it is to have no access to your phone, when you are used to checking your e-mails, texting, and Facebooking all day? (I felt like I was smart-phone detoxing!)
