BeBerryAware: Are All Cranberry Juices Created Equal???

If it’s one thing I have learned on my journey to health living that just because the label seems healthy, doesn’t mean the product is. I’ve seen foods, vitamins, and drinks all claim to be healthy yet once I researched a bit further they were very far from it.  Unfortunately they can claim whatever they’d like, but it doesn’t always make it true. I found this out as I was looking through the labels of some different cranberry juices at my local grocery.

Be Berry Aware #ad

Why Recommend High-Contest Cranberry Juice?

  • 8 oz. of cranberry juice, with a minimum of 27% cranberry juice, provides the same health benefits as 1 1/2 cups of whole berries
  • The rich red color of cranberry juice is derived from anthocyanin’s which are naturally occurring flavonoids – a type of antioxidant with health promotion potential
  • Cranberry juice contains a unique and abundant polyphenol proanthocyanidin (PAC-A) which sets it apart from other juices and is responsible for its bacterial anti-adhesion properties
  • Cranberry juice ‘cocktails’ may contain high-fructose corn syrup as a sweetener but still provide the same calorie, carb and sugar content as 100% juice blends. The difference is the 100% juice blends provide vitamins and phytonutrients from the other juices, HFCS sweetens but does not provide nutritional value
  • Other healthy and popular juices like apple juice and orange juice have similar carb and sugar content as cranberry juice products
  • 100% cranberry juice is considered a ‘nutrient dense’ beverage – per calorie, it packs more nutritional value than other beverage choices. However, pure cranberry juice is very tart
  • 70% of Americans do not meet the daily allowance for fruits and vegetables. Although whole foods contain more fiber and contribute better to satiety than juice, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines and MyPlate acknowledge a serving per day of 100% juice as a fruit and/or vegetable allowance
  • The National Kidney Foundation suggests drinking a glass of cranberry juice daily may help prevent urinary tract infections

10 cranberry juices to look for

If you don’t like the acidic flavor of cranberry juice (sometimes it bothers me), try these simple summer ideas to cut the tartness and enjoy the nutritional benefits, and find more tips & info at BeBerryAware‘s website.

  • Mix 1/4 cup of pure cranberry juice (or 1 cup of cranberry cocktail or 100% juice blend) with 1 cup of sparkling lime water. If you prefer a sweeter flavor add a few drops of liquid stevia or subsitute a diet lemon-lime soft drink. Serve over ice.
  • Mix either 1/4 cup of pure cranberry juice, or 1 cup 100% juice blend or cocktail with 1 cup of iced tea, add a few drops of liquid stevia or honey if you prefer a sweeter flavor. Serve over ice.
  • Cranberry Sangria: Simply combine the following ingredients and chill for 4 hours. A bottle (750 ml) of fruity red wine, 4 cups of cranberry juice, 1 cup of orange juice, 1 thinly sliced orange, 1 cored and thinly sliced apple, 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen cranberries. Serve over ice

Other Tips:

  • In the wintertime try a hot mulled cranberry drink. Simple combine 1 cup of cranberry juice, 1/2 Tbsp maple syrup, 1 cinnamon stick, 2 cloves and a slice of orange in a saucepan. Simmer gently and strain before serving. For an adult version add a splash of brandy before serving.
  • When making oatmeal try replacing the water with cranberry juice.
  • Add pure cranberry juice to a vinaigrette with a touch of honey to perk up your salad greens or add a unique flavor to a marinade.

Meijer’s Back-to-School Photo Sweepstakes!

It’s about that time again – back to school. I’ve already started talking about it, since my kid’s school decided to start back extra early this year. I have two weeks from today to prepare… YIKES!

Though I don’t always love all the craziness that goes with getting the kids back on track, I do love watching them learn and grow. It’s amazing when my kids come home from school and share all the wonderful stuff they have learned and they are excited about it!

I call my oldest Ms. Encyclopedia.  You can start talking about a subject, and she will spout out random facts about said subject, and continue telling us all we want to know (or even what we don’t) about said subject. It’s actually kind of fun, because if I don’t know something I can just ask her. She’s a whiz, and her dream is to become a scientist – and I can just see her in about 10 years from now in some lab discovering the cure for cancer. She also loves music, and plays viola in her orchestra at school. She said she may play in the Cincinnati Symphony when she grows up – of course as a side job, as she finds cures for diseases.

Do you have a vision of what your child will be like in the future? Do they do things now, that you can see them doing 20 years from now? Well Meijer is having a “Most Likely To..” photo contest to share your story.

Simply enter on Meijer’s Facebook Page . Upload a picture showing what your child is most likely to be when he/she grows up, and be entered to win $100 Meijer gift card!

My son is also quite entertaining. He is a Mr. Fix-It. If something is broken (like the handle on the bathroom door) he tries to fix it with his little bag of tools. If I tell my husband something needs fixed, want to guess who the first one is working on it? I have learned to keep it quiet, or the boy will have an entire vacuum pulled apart trying to fix it for Mom. (gotta love ’em!) From the time he was big enough to hold a screw driver, he’s been trying to take things apart. I can see him being some type of engineer or mechanic.

Mr. Fix It

What will your child be when they grow up? Do they favor a sport, or hobby that seems to be their passion??
Take those pictures, and enter the “Most Likely to..” Contest now!

This helps keep the house in order without Mommy losing her mind doing it all herself. The kids love it because they know they can make money by helping out around the house.

Motivational Monday: 10 Steps to Staying Motivated to Work Out

motivation for working out

I will admit – I am a “buy now, pay later” type of girl. When it comes to shopping, eating or anything I do. When I want something, I want it now. Patience is a virtue, but not a virtue of mine..and when it comes to working out/weight loss this can be a very bad thing.  When you work your arse off for a month straight and see no results, the first thing I want to do is eat a cheeseburger, pizza, french fries, chocolate. Yeah, chocolate. Either way sometimes it’s very hard for me to see the big picture. I get tired, I get lazy, I just get unmotivated.

Time and time again it seems like I start from scratch because I screw up, and like I talked about before – I fall off the wagon.  But this time around is different, I’ve found a few steps to help me stay motivated, and I have to tell you. So far so good!

1. Get your workout over with – Before any thing else takes over your day, work out either in the early morning before work (or RIGHT after) or before the kids get up (or home from school).  Write it down in your calendar because if your workout is not in your schedule – it does not exist.

2. Tell Yourself – Have  music to wake you up prior to your workout , or have it going on your way to the gym. I have my alarm set early and the text reads “You gotta’ get your work out in, so GET UP!”

3. Write it Out  – Write down your goal and put it up in your bedroom, your bathroom, your desk, or heck, even your frig. Some where you can see it EVERYDAY.

4. Performance Cue –  Instead of watching the clock, or timer on your machine – set up 30 – 45 minutes of music on your phone or iPod. Set a work out schedule to each song, and before you know it – your done! I have fast         upbeat songs for when I’m running, and more toned down songs for my warm up , and my cool down.

5. Even When Your Down– DO IT. The more you keep this promise to yourself, the easier it will get to keep doing it.. You will sharpen not only your body, but your mind as well.

6. Have a workout partner – You motivate your friend – and visa versa. Even if you can’t have a ‘literal’ work out partner, then a friend whom has the same goals as yourself, can be your accountability partner.

7.  Know what  you want:   Are you doing this to work out, get in shape, train for a sport or a run? Do your research. Make sure you know what exercises you should be doing, how far you should be pushing yourself,
and how far you should be after a certain time period.

8.  Understanding Fitness – Once you understand that fitness, flexibility, speed, agility, strength and power are all components of performing at your best, it is easier to stay motivated to work out and build the foundation needed to prevent injuries and be your best.

9. Change it up – Don’t do the same old workout week after week. Not only will you get bored with it , but your body will stop responding. Change up the workout by adding weights, calisthenics, new exercises, new cardio options over a  2-3 weeks.

10.  Never let go  – Not everyone can be first place, first pick, or top 5. You will always have someone who is better, faster, stronger. But ask any coach/fitness expert  if they would rather have a group of hard working players with heart or a group of talented players with little heart??  Hard work wins every time.
