Easy Tips for Choosing a Carpet

Buying a house is a big decision – the next biggest decision is your flooring. It’s not cheap, we all know that.  But you what what’s perfect for your home, and for your family.

carpet

When it comes to designing a room for you and your family, it’s important to consider what type of environment you hope to create. If comfort and warmth are important factors in your room’s design, there is truly no better choice than carpet. However, there are virtually thousands of carpet choices in today’s flooring market, so choosing the perfect carpet takes a little consideration. When selecting a carpet for your home, consider the following:

  • It’s important to assess the amount of foot traffic that occurs in your home regularly. When picking a carpet, determine how much activity typically takes place in the room. This will help you decide on the most durable option.
  • Do you want an extremely soft carpet or a carpet that is extremely durable and stain resistant? Some stain resistant carpets are also soft to the touch, so you can get the best of both worlds.
  • You must accurately measure your room before deciding on the perfect carpet choice. If you’re unsure on how to accurately get a measurement of your room, consider seeking out the advice of a flooring professional.
  • Choose a trusted flooring provider when choosing a carpet.
  • Find out what warranties come with the carpet you’re looking at. Some warranties cover a lot of common problems that others may not.

What tips do you have for finding the best carpet for your home??

Merck Recalls Liptruzet – How It Affects You

News erupted this week from the healthcare world as Merck took one of its new products off of pharmacy shelves through a nationwide recall.  Liptruzet is the cholesterol lowering drug that is manufactured by Merck, one of the world’s largest drug makers. It was approved by the Food and Drug administration in May, 2013 for the treatment of elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol). It combines two popular medications which work in tandem to help prevent heart attacks & strokes:

  • Atorvastatin, which reduces the body’s natural cholesterol production.
  • Zetia (Ezetimibe), a Merck-produced drug that decreases the amount of   cholesterol absorbed from food.

The drug has been recalled as of January of this year.  The reason for the recall is not due to any reports of the drug being harmful. The recall of Liptruzet is the result of defects found in the foil pouches that hold the pills. Merck has stated that the pouches could decrease the drug’s effectiveness by allowing air and moisture inside. The recall covers all four dose strengths and every batch distributed since the drug was launched in May of 2013.

With exception of patients who already have the medicine or pharmacies that are currently carrying it, the recall will effectively clear out Merck’s entire Liptruzet stock in the U.S. Cardiologists do not expect major health problems to result from the recall, mostly because both Atorvastatin and Zetia will remain available separately and can still be prescribed by physicians..

“Patients are not going to be in any harm’s way just going on atorvastatin until this packaging issue gets corrected,” says Dr. Kevin Marzo, chief of cardiology at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. Marzo has stated that since the drug has only been on the market for several months, it’s not likely that doctors have been prescribing it widely.

It is worth reiterating that the recall is focused on the packaging, not the drug itself.  It turns out that the foil pouch containers used to store the drug during transport are not as air-tight as the company would have liked them to be.  There is a slight possibility that air and moisture could enter the container which would oxidate the drug and reduce its overall effectiveness.  The possibility also exists that mold or other biological agents could “set up shop” in the packaging and cause health issues of their own.

“If a doctor feels a patient needs the combination treatment, then the doctor can prescribe both drugs individually and the patient can take two pills,” explains Dr. Deepak Bhatt, the executive director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart and Vascular Center, in Boston. Furthermore, Bhatt has said that the real risk of this recall is not ineffectiveness that may be caused by the packaging but that patients will hear about it and stop taking their cholesterol medication altogether. “Bottom line, this is something that can be addressed in a relatively straightforward way. The key is not to say, ‘Well, I don’t have to take anything in its place.”

Patients who still have Liptruzet can continue to it, according to Merck, and should talk with their doctor before they quit taking it.

The drug maker has issued a statement to reassure patients and pharmacies that have been carrying its Liptruzet stock, that they are working together with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to correct the problem and are committed to resupplying Liptruzet to the US market with improved packaging “as soon as possible”.

There have been no reports of adverse reactions or product quality complaints thus far. Any reactions or problems from the use Liptruzet may be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online at:  www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm or via phone by calling (800) 672-6372.

5 PRO LEVEL Preventative Health Tips

Being sick is not something anyone looks forward to but unfortunately it is unavoidable. While maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, resisting smoking and practicing safe sex are always recommended and definitely great ways to enhance your overall health and well-being, sometimes illnesses or even diseases can still find their way into your life. Here are a few more ways you should consider to make sure your health is up to par.

5. Perform Gender Specific Screening: Breast and/or testicular self-exams, pap smears, mammograms and bone density scans as well as prostate exams are excellent ways to detect diseases that target a particular gender such as Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Prostate Cancer and Osteoporosis. Each specific screening looks for a different disease so it’s best to make sure you’re getting all that are recommended for your gender and age group.

4. Perform Colon Cancer Screening: Most people, female or male, should start getting screened for colon cancer after the age of 50. Colon cancer is considered the second leading cause of deaths in the United States. There are three ways to detect colon cancer; colonoscopy, fecal occult blood exam and sigmoidoscopy. Your health care provider can tell you which of these methods would be best for you and how often you should have it done for best results.

3. Perform Diabetes Screening: Diabetes, when not properly controlled can lead to blindness, kidney disease, the need for limb amputation as well as many other health issues. The disease can affect all age groups and genders. With almost 9 percent of all Americans (27 percent of Americans 65 and older) having been diagnosed with Diabetes, the screening for any form of Diabetes is very important.

2. Perform Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Screening: Heart attacks, strokes, eye and kidney problems are just a few things that can be cause by high blood pressure. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 139/89, your physician may request you get screened more often.

High cholesterol is one of the main risk factors of heart disease, the United States’ number one cause of death. Physicians recommend you start getting your cholesterol screened at the age of 20 with the frequency of testing increasing as you get older.

1. Perform Immunizations: Vaccines are the front line defense against many diseases and we begin getting them as soon as we’re born. Measles, mumps, chicken pox, polio and many other diseases are prevented by immunizations before we even start school. As adults, some of the most common immunizations include Flu and pneumonia shots and the Shingles vaccine.

Most diseases are easily maintained or cured when detected early. When combined with an overall healthy lifestyle, these preventive measures will help you stay vigorous. Since the Affordable Care Act was passed, most preventive care procedures including screenings and immunizations are now offered at no cost to you. Ask your doctor how often each test or immunization is necessary based off of your family and personal health history.

Get Creative and Decorate with Minted.com

This is a sponsored post; I’ve received product in exchange for this review, but all opinions are my own.

To be honest, we’ve never lived anywhere long enough until now for me to worry about decorating our house. It seems like every time I’d get the curtains hung we were moving again. I was so excited when we found a house with enough room for all of us, and close enough to my parents for their help when my husband was out of town. I have always loved to decorate and this is finally the time I get to do what I love the most – shop and decorate!

I love to start with the walls, and work my way down. It’s a lot easier to find pillows/comforters/shams, etc to match a great print then it is to find a great print to match the other stuff. So I started over at Minted.com and was overwhelmed with how many great prints they had to offer.

My youngest daughter who just happens to be coming up on her 10th birthday has a small fascination with Paris. In fact, that is her whole birthday theme for her party next week (you’ll have to watch for that post, we have some great things to share!) So when I found this great print of the Eiffel Tower I knew it would be perfect for her room. I can choose from many sizes to fit her wall, and my budget as well as whatever color frame would best suit the room.

Since we are using the Eiffel Tower art print as her ‘eye catcher’ I decided to look for something for my living room. Right now above our fireplace my husband has a canvas print of his families camp. Though I love it, I think it needs moved to our bedroom or possibly into his man cave. It’s a bit small for the size of the fireplace, and I wanted something that commemorated  our entire family, and I was so excited when I found the Heart Snapshot Mix Photo Art.  As most of your know my Dad is a photographer so we are never lacking on great photos of the kids, or the family at holidays. This was the perfect centerpiece to our home to share some great photos without taking up the entire way! Plus the great heart shape is just so charming. I can’t wait until mine arrives!

They also have some other great products they offer that I spent wayy too much time looking at. Birthday decor, stationary, journals, business cards you name it, Minted has it!
