Fitness Friday: 5 Reasons to Start Bike Riding

It seems like a lot of people are going ‘green’ and picking up riding bikes for their commute versus driving. Though riding your bike definitely can help save the planet (and your wallet), bike riding is one of the most effective exercises that you can do. Here’s 5 Reasons to start riding for a workout.

1. You Can Do It On The Go:
Half of American workers live within five miles of their workplace, according to the most recent National Household Transportation Survey. That’s a totally doable 20-minute ride each way. If you live close to your office, you can pedal to work twice a week and burn up to 3,000 extra calories—close to one pound of fat—each month.

2. It Burns Major Calories
A 235-pound woman pedaling 12 to 14 miles an hour blast up to 976 calories in 60 minutes.

3. It Tones – Everywhere
Cyclists are notorious for having killer legs. After all, the quads, glutes, and calves are propelling the bike. But working the handlebar sculpts your upper body too, giving you balanced tone, says Erik Moen, a physical therapist who treats elite athletes.

4. It’s a MAJOR Energy Booster
Feeling sluggish? A study published in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics found that bike riding improved energy levels by 20 percent and decreased fatigue by 65 percent. Why? Cycling triggers your brain to release the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is linked to energy, says lead author Patrick O’Connor, Ph.D., a professor of kinesiology at the University of Georgia at Athens. There’s no need to ride hard to harness the perk. People in the study who pedaled at a low to moderate pace three times a week fought fatigue best.

5. It’s a PAIN Saver
Riding a bike puts a lot less stress on the knees, ankles, and spine than walking or running. Get the perfect fit: Your knee should bend just slightly (about 25 degrees) on the down pedal stroke. If it’s too straight or too bent, bring your ride to a bike shop and have a professional fitter adjust your saddle.

McAlister’s Deli Review & Giveaway

I received complimentary meals in exchange for this review, all opinions are honest and my own.
mcalisters deli

McAlister’s is a deli style dine in restaurant with more options then you can know what to do with. We originally had planned to visit during lent, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we didn’t make it in time to try all their lent friendly items such as, Ultimate nachos with veggie chili, garden salads, taco salads with veggie chili, shrimp salad, cajun shrimp po boy, canjun shrimp ceaser wrap, the veggie TM, Veggie club, Four Cheese Griller , Tuna salad sandwich not to mention their yummy baked potatoes aka ‘spuds’ with cheese, veggie spud, and the veggie chili spud.

So the girls and I decided to take my parents for a Saturday lunch date and shopping while the boys were out playing in the mud (literally – mudding in Daddy’s Jeep). We decided to head to our local West Chester location because they have tons of great shopping around. West Chester Ohio has grown in the past 10 years, and is quite a nice community. We arrived kind of late (it was after 2) and we were all starving. We had never visited McAlister’s so were weren’t sure quite what to expect.

I loved the warm friendly appeal, almost like a cafe. They had the charming chalk board with their menu, as well as paper menu’s to look at. It didn’t take me long to decide (again – I was STARVING) but my girls’ are another story. They both love chili so they couldn’t decide between that and a sandwich. So they decided to both get chili and split a sandwich which ended up being a great idea. They picked the Classic Club, and it was HUGE.
mcalisters-deli
I tasted their chili – and I agree it was quite delicious.

I went for one of my favorite classics – a BLT. It came with a side (I chose chips) and a drink and a cookie!
mcalisters-deli
My Mom got a club on ciabatta  bread – she said it was delicious!
mcalisters-deli
We were obviously stuffed when we left – but we can’t forget the cookies! They were delicious, and my spoiled oldest actually got one of their brownies which she said was one of the best she’s ever tasted (aside from yours truly of course!) They also have one of the best sweet tea’s and lemonades I’ve ever tasted. I would go back just for a glass of that lemonade!

So since I’ve raved and raved about it, you must be dying to try McAlister’s Deli  for yourself right?  I’m giving one lucky reader 2 McAlister’s VIP cards – good for one sandwich (or spud) of your choice, with a side, drink and of course, a cookie!

Diagnosis Online Now with American Well

Tracking PixelThis is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of American Well.

Have you ever needed to go to the Doctor, but just didn’t have the time?? I’ve been suffering with pain in my arm for a few weeks now – I think I know what it is (a pinched nerve for lifting weights) and I knew I should get into the Doctor to make sure, and find out what I needed to do to make it better. But my work schedule and my kids schedule, not to mention trying to get an appointment can be a big headache. That’s why I felt it was a divine intervention (Angels singing here) when I discovered American Well.

We were able to discuss my symptoms and problems, and she was able to give me a diagnosis – all from the comforts of my desk chair, on my lunch break! No need to wait for hours in office, using up valuable vacation time.  It is available on your smart phone, tablet or computer.
BONUS: The fee for talking to her was less then my Family Doctor Co-Pay!

5 Tips to Healthy Meal Planning

Getting healthy or trying to lose weight is not easy. It takes a lot of hard work, focus, and discipline. Where I have learned to make time for working out, my food has been a different story. I haven’t spent enough time planning not only dinners, but lunches and snacks for me and the rest of the family. Meal planning truly sets the foundation for healthy eating. Planning your meals for the week ahead can help alleviate much unwanted stress that can come with cooking during the week (in other words equals grabbing take out!). Also, you are much more likely to make better choices when having a plan.

Look At the Week Ahead

When it comes to meal planning, it’s important to see what activities your week ahead will include. Perhaps your child has an after-school activity or you plan to work late to meet a deadline. Since busier days can often lead to choosing quick and easy fast-food meals, plan to cook larger portions earlier in the week and put away some for leftovers. Planning for no-cook meals such as wraps or salads, which only take a few minutes, is another healthy alternative to fast food.

Find Recipe Inspiration

It can be easy to get stuck in a rut with cooking. Many of us have old standby meals in our weekly rotation. To liven up your cooking, search ahead for new recipes to try. You can print them out and organize them in a recipe book or look to sites like Pinterest where you can save and share recipes online. (Check out some of my Pinterest boards, All Things Paleo , Healthy Snacks and Dinner Meal Ideas).  If you are short on time, look for recipes that involve little preparation, short cooking times, or even use the help of a slow cooker.

Map It Out

Whether you prefer to use a calendar on your phone or just simply pen and paper, it is important to write out the meals you plan to make for the week. Label your mealsMonday through Sunday and be sure to include days you plan to eat out. If you struggle with eating healthy at lunch, you might want to consider making a meal planfor your lunches for the upcoming week as well. It is much easier to stick with yourmeals for the week when you have them organized.

Make Your Grocery List

How many times have you gone to the grocery store more than once in a week because you had forgotten to pick up a certain ingredient or needed to pick up dinner for that night? Since our time is valuable, planning out an in-depth grocery list will save you in the long run. First, check what you have at home. Are there certain staples that you need to restock or already own? Next, look at your dinner recipesand decide what ingredients you will need. Make sure to pick up healthy snacks to have at home along with your regular staples whether it be milk, coffee, or bread. The majority of your list should include whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, grains and nuts.

Prep All At Once

When you arrive home from the grocery store and are starting to put everything away, use this time to prep your food for the week as well. If you need chopped vegetables for a dish that night as well as later in the week, why not use just the one cutting board and do it all at once? If you plan to make chicken, cook up extra to use for salads, wraps, or sandwiches later on. By doing the prep ahead, it will save you time during your busy week.
