The Benefits of Water Softeners

If you are curious about water softeners, but you’re not sure if you need one or not – well you do. Water softeners have a lot of benefits that will save you time, money, and make you feel your best.

We moved from a home that didn’t have a water softener, to one that did – and I can’t even begin to tell you what a huge difference it makes in every day living from cleaner hair to better coffee!

Hair & Skin. Soft water is wayy better for your hair and skin than hard water. Hard water can cause mineral build-up on your body, which causes interference with soap so you don’t get as clean – not to mention its a lot nicer to shower in.

Appliances Last a Lot Longer. Hard water can be rough on your appliances. Hard water forms deposits on the inside of your appliances like your washer, dishwasher, and anywhere you use it. The deposits clog up your appliances and causes them to break down; when you use a water softening system it extends the life of your appliances (which means you aren’t replacing them as often). It also prevents limescale from building up on your shower head and faucets.

Clothes Stay Newer Longer. You’re clothes get the same effect as your skin does when you continuously use hard water. Without a water softening system your clothes will be stiff and dingy.

Energy Saving. Hard water makes your water heater work harder (just like your appliances) A new softener can actually pay for itself in energy savings cost since your hot water heater isn’t working as hard!

Your Dishes Get Cleaner. Hard water can cause your dishes and glasses to be spotty or cloudy – a simple switch to soft water can make your dishes cleaner and spotless!

I picked up a bag of Morton Salt at Walmart, and it’s a perfect salt to use in your water softener.

Want to find out if you indeed do have hard water in your home? Just by visiting Morton Salt and filling out a form, they will send you a free water test strip to determine if you have any hard water issues.

The Perfect Gift for Your Favorite Grad

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Motherhood and Church Hills Classics.

Graduation season is almost upon us – so much excitement, and such an emotional time for parents and family members (trust me, I know from experience). All these years of planning in high school, and then years of hard work and sacrifice to make it through college – it’s finally time to celebrate.

Graduates look forward to moving on in life, starting their careers and officially becoming an adult. When they look back at their time in college, they look back at the good ol’ days, the fun, and of course the pride in accomplishing their dreams and plans.

My cousin Stephanie recently graduated from Miami University – and we couldn’t be more proud. Not only did she finish top in her class, but she had decided to become a teacher. Could we be any more proud?

Miami_university

She worked very hard to finish and invested a lot of money and time into earning her diploma. There have only been a handful of college graduates in our family, so I knew when I was searching for her graduation gift that I wanted to give her something she could enjoy for years to come.

I decided that purchasing a quality diploma frame as a graduation gift would let her know how proud I was of her, and that would help remind her of all her accomplishments she achieved.

How to Get Your Kids to Help with Spring Cleaning

Every parent knows that kids don’t want to clean, it is their sole desire to have fun and enjoy childhood but as a parent we need to instill some organization and cleaning skills within our children as a means to help them grow into well rounded adults. Today we will discuss how to have your kids help with Spring cleaning as a means for you to get the chore of Spring cleaning completed faster.

Index Cards

Using one index card per child with a list of their assigned tasks during Spring cleaning will alleviate the flack to you as the parent. Every child learns to tune out their parents at some point, using index cards sets a clear instruction of what you expect from each child and allows them to learn how to prioritize their tasks. One card might say, “Help daddy change the furnace filter,” while another might be as simple as cleaning out the refrigerator. Sit down and discuss that Spring cleaning is in full bloom and that you will all be working together as a family to get that chore done so that you can have more time to do other things afterward.

Uplift the Environment

Are you a family who works best when there is music playing? Turn on some tunes to have in the background so that the children will focus on that wonderful music instead of the mundane tasks that they are required to complete. Having an uplifting environment through background music makes Spring cleaning fly by faster for both parents and children, as it sets the mood to be positive and in turn encourages a little motivation without saying a word.

Get Creative

Creativity always wins with children and Spring cleaning, let your children wear old socks and slip slide all over the hardwood floors to help dust the home. You can also use this sock method for dusting of furniture by allowing the children to wear old socks on their hands; this is way more fun to a child than the regular dusting methods. Have a child who is OCD? Let them alphabetize the spices while they organize them in your spice rack or cupboard. Let your child pretend to be a detective while they clean your pantry in search of expired items.

Reward, Reward, Reward

Much like adults, children just want to feel appreciated for their efforts. Once your children have put in the hard day’s work of Spring cleaning with you, reward them with something fun. The reward for having kids help with Spring cleaning doesn’t have to cost you a dime! Use a little creativity to find ways to make your children feel appreciated for helping with Spring cleaning. Maybe you can designate some one on one time or after you are all done working together to Spring clean you can take them to their favorite park and let loose to be a kid with them!

How to Have Your Kids Help with Spring Cleaning

Overall, the best methods on how to have your kids help with Spring cleaning comes down to not nagging, use index cards to assign their tasks, make the environment encouraging with music in background, use creativity in both methods of Spring cleaning as well as with the rewards afterward. If you follow these few tips on how to get kids to help with Spring cleaning, you are sure to have success and a clean home!

Celebrities Get Sick Too: When Illness Strikes Hollywood

When a celebrity discloses an illness, the world seems to stand still for a moment. Acknowledging that the beautiful, talented and rich are also, well, human reminds us commonfolk of our own mortality.

In this situation, celebrities typically choose one of two routes: Either they become champions for the disease afflicting them, as Michael J. Fox did after announcing his years-long battle with Parkinson’s, or they ask that the public respects their privacy and they go through treatment in (relative) peace.

While neither option is “right” or “wrong,” people who have the same health condition as a celebrity often have strong opinions about how this celebrity handles their illness. As health insights website Treato discovered in an analysis of online conversations about celebrities and their health conditions, people want celebrity patients to be proud advocates — and resent them when they’re not.

Out of all the celebrities Treato looked at, Catherine Zeta-Jones was the most well-liked. If you don’t remember, it was reported in 2011 that the Welsh actress sought treatment for bipolar disorder. In subsequent interviews, Zeta-Jones was frank and open about her struggles with mental illness because, she said, she didn’t think it was anything to be ashamed of and recognized that tens of millions worldwide dealt with similar issues.

To people struggling with bipolar disorder and other types of mental illness, Zeta-Jones was seen as a positive role model. The stability that she appeared to have achieved in her professional and private lives made her not only relatable but also enviable. In other words, fans wanted to be like her.

In the health forums Treato investigated, fans decidedly did not want to be like Kim Kardashian, who suffers from psoriasis. If Catherine Zeta-Jones is the picture of elegance and professional achievement, Kim Kardashian is the exact opposite. In the episode of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” in which the reality star and model visits a dermatologist and is diagnosed with psoriasis, she worried about “what the tabloids would do to [her] if they saw all these spots.”

Patients with psoriasis felt that Kardashian had wasted an opportunity to address the stigma related to the condition. Had she accepted her diagnosis without shame, she could have inspired others to do the same. Not surprisingly, there were no positive online conversations regarding Kim Kardashian and her treatment.

Former President Jimmy Carter and actor Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones’ husband, were two other notable celebrities in Treato’s analysis. People felt that Carter, who recently underwent treatment for melanoma, was raising awareness for immunotherapy, a new method for treating cancer. Similarly, online commenters said that Michael Douglas had taught them that HPV can cause cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2010. Like his wife, Douglas was seen as more relatable than other celebrities.

Perhaps what patients ultimately want from celebrities with whom they share a health condition is hope. If stars, who have so much to lose, can face an illness with courage and speak openly about their struggles, what’s stopping the rest of us?

Spring Cleaning Survival Guide

This post is sponsored by Kimberly-Clark and The Motherhood.

I know the concept of Spring Cleaning. It’s a new start from the dreary winter, time to open the windows and let the fresh air in – but if you are like me you always wonder, “how in the world am I going to manage that?” Spring to my family means baseball and soccer practices every waking moment (OK every moment I’m not at work), my allergies are usually doing a number on me – and when they aren’t, well honestly I want to be outside. I want to work on my yard, or take a hike or a bike ride and enjoy not being coped up in the house.

So though most of my Spring hours are already accounted for, I know that in order for me to really enjoy my summer that I need to get my house into shape. The long winter makes my old house smell a bit musty (no matter how many candles I light), and let’s face it, the holidays really keep most of us too busy to get any real cleaning done anyway.  So here it is: Your Spring Cleaning Survival Guide for Those Who Wish They Could be Anywhere Else (almost).

Step 1. Be Prepared

If you don’t have what you need when you need it, you are going to be spending a really, really long time on this Spring Cleaning project. You need to write out your shopping list and have everything you need ready to go for when you start. Below is a really great list to get you going- (everything you need can be found for great prices at Walmart). I pick up great products like Viva®, Scott®, Cottonelle® – which is great that I can find them all in one convenient location.

Spring Cleaning Shopping ListStep 2. Make a Game Plan. Now being prepared not only means making sure you have all the products you need, but also having a game plan. Whether you are a CEO or a student, a game plan is the most successful way to accomplish your goals in an efficient, timely manner. My goal when Spring Cleaning is to get the most done in the least amount of time as possible. So if I have a game plan set up and ready to go – I know what to do after each task is completed, I’m not going to get as easily distracted and waste precious time. My Spring Cleaning Game Plan is something as simple as this Checklist. I know what needs done in each room and I don’t leave that room until everything is checked off. This printable checklist makes it super easy to stay on task.

Step 3. Get to Work. Honestly we could all spend hours make the list just right, buying a ton of products to use for this or that – but if you want to survive Spring Cleaning this year – without spending the entire season well, cleaning – you need to get to work. Make sure you have everything you need (CHECK!) make your game plan (CHECK!) and get down to business! The quicker you get it done – the faster you can go outside and enjoy that beautiful weather!
