Why You Need To Stop Neglecting Your Garage

garage1

It is widely believed that the garage is one of the most neglected areas of the house. Because most of us regard it simply as a storage area for our car or knick-knacks, we don’t treat it well. We don’t show our garage the same amount of care and respect that we do to other rooms in the house. The less attention we pay to it, the more unkempt it becomes. The more unkempt it becomes, the less attention we pay to it! But in an increasingly competitive housing market, space is highly prized. If we have the good fortune to have the additional space that a garage offers us, we should be making the most of it. Garages are often spacious areas that can be seen as a blanket canvas in terms of style and decor. If we put our minds to it, we can accomplish something truly creative and inviting in our garage. Our car may be stored there, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t have other uses too. Read on for the unmissable reasons why you need to stop neglecting your garage.

It Adds Value To A Home

Any additional space like gardens, garages, or spare rooms add value to our home. Even if we are not considering selling at present, we never know when our circumstances may change. It always makes sense to keep areas of the house in a good state of repair. It makes it a more pleasant environment for us and is more financially intelligent too. Small outlays on repair here and there can prevent us from having to address a complicated and expensive problem later down the line.

It Can Keep The Rest Of The Home Tidy

If we are disciplined, the garage can become one of the home’s most useful storage areas. We should try not to simply pile in any discarded items and junk. The room will rapidly become dirty and disorganized and will need soon need a time-consuming clean out! But if we are selective, we can minimize the clutter around the rest of the house and store it effectively in a well-maintained garage. Even if our space is limited, we can invest in high storage racks or stackable containers. Many people are shocked to discover that their house is more spacious than they realized without so much clutter. But a high proportion of homeowners are not effectively using the space provided by their garages.

It Can Keep Us Safe
A safe garage should be seen as an essential part of home maintenance. Faulty garage doors and locks can put the safety of our car and our whole house in jeopardy. We should consider new garage doors if ours have seen better days. A poorly maintained garage door can provide easy access to our home for thieves. If it is discovered that areas have fallen into disrepair and not been addressed, this affects our insurance claims. We should take precautions to keep the garage safe and secure. It can also add additional ventilation to the house so we should be careful not to allow damp to set in. A dry, well-ventilated garage can help keep the structure and walls of the house sounder for longer.

There were tons of booths and so many different varieties we decided to step out of our comfort zone and try some brews we might not normally order when were out. We tried some ales, some IPAs (I have to say ,not my favorite) and some awesome ciders I could definitely drink again. It was fun to walk around, listen to the great music, and of course try so many great craft beers.

Finding a Car for Your Growing Family

This review was made possible by iConnect and Autotrader.  I was provided compensation to facilitate this post, but all opinions stated are 100% mine.

Finding the right car of your growing family can be a bit overwhelming – there are about 300 new cars on the market each year, and trying to narrow it down to just one can make even the most patient shopper a bit anxious.

But following these simple steps will help you narrow down your choices and hopefully find you a car that’s a perfect fit.

Budget. First thing first – money. You don’t want to start looking and fall in love with a vehicle you can’t afford (trust me, I know from experience). Figuring out how much you can afford, and what you are willing to pay is the first step to vehicle elimination.

Size. If you have a growing family a 2-door sedan just isn’t going to cut it – and sometimes either is a 5 seater small SUV (again, I know from experience). Sometimes an SUV is the right size, sometimes it’s a mini van or even a full size van. Let me tell you from experience – don’t just go by the size of your family. Think grocery shopping, running from sports practice to another game, oh and vacations! Make sure you have plenty of room for the size of your family.

What else do you need? Besides size and budget, what else are you looking for in a vehicle? A few questions to ask yourself:

  • Do I want automatic or manual transmission?
  • What safety features do I want?
  • Do I want 4-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive (or does it matter)?
  • Do I need a lot of cargo room?
  • Can I drive it without issue (being able to see rear-view mirror, see over the dash, park it without a problem, etc)

Take it on a Test Drive. By far one of the most important steps in the car buying process is test driving the vehicles you are interested in – this will be the tell-all. Is this really what you want? Does it handle well? Do you feel comfortable driving it?

I’d recommend following Autotraders.com Must-Take Test Driving Tips, such as:

  1. Come prepared with people and stuff.

Your test drive should mimic closely the way you use your car in day-to-day driving, so you need to bring the people and items that typically ride with you. If you have a family, take them along. Try a child safety seat to see how it fits. Throw your golf bag in the trunk. See if your lanky teenager can sit comfortably in the backseat. If you’re single and typically drive alone, bring a friend. You’ll benefit from the help of a sidekick anyway.

  1. Don’t follow the usual route

When you take a test drive with a dealership salesperson, it’s likely that the route won’t be very long. Nearly any salesperson will allow a longer test drive, if a shopper requests it, especially if they’re serious about making a sale. Make sure you test the road in your typical driving conditions—through neighborhoods, on the highway, and in rush hour traffic if your daily commute has you in tenuous stop-and-go traffic. And don’t forget to try driving it home, if possible, and parking it in your garage to see if it fits.

  1. Drive on rough roads

One of the most important places to go on a test drive is on rough roads to find out how a car drives on harsh surfaces. It would be no fun to drive home in a new car and discover later that the ride is too jarring for you to handle.

  1. Drive on curvy roads

After you’ve driven on a rough road and on the highway, your next stop should be a road with some curves. You’ll want to do this in order to feel the physics of the car. Is it too top-heavy? Do its motions make you carsick? And, of course, do you feel like the steering and handling is adequate for your needs? A curvy road is the best place to answer each of those questions.

  1. Try parking the car in various scenarios.

Many shoppers on a test drive forget a crucial aspect of driving that can be very stressful: parking. That’s why we strongly suggest that you take any vehicle and try to park it in different parking places like a crowded parking lot and even a parallel parking space. If you do, you might discover potential flaws with the car, such as a large turning radius or poor visibility. Of course, you also might find out that the car is easy to park, which can only be a good thing.

  1. Test the infotainment system and connect your phone.
The interface for making phone calls, answering texts and accessing the maps on your phone is probably the portion of the car you’ll interact with many times per day – second only to the steering wheel and seats. Make sure the pairing is easy, that the graphics are large enough to read at a glance. If at all possible, look for a system that is very easy to use like Chrysler’s Uconnect or either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Potty Training Made Simple

When your kids are younger there is one thing that can frustrate even the most patient parents – potty training.

Potty training age is never set in stone – it depends on the physical and emotional readiness of the child. Some kids are ready and rearing at 2, some are quiet a bit older. Just remember that there isn’t a rush! Give it a try when you think they are ready – if they are great, if not, try it again in a few months. If you’re not sure if your child is ready or not, ask yourself these simple questions:

Is your child interested in the potty? Do they ask you questions about going, or are they interested in wearing underwear?

Can they follow and understand directions, and what using the potty means?

Do they know when they need to go? (I knew my son was ready when he started hiding behind the couch and crouching down to do a #2!)

Do they stay dry for long periods of time? (Mine would be bone dry and a few minutes later, leak through his diaper!)

Do they let you know when they need a diaper change?

If you answered yes to most of the questions above, your little one just may be ready to make that step into toddler-hood!

QUALITY GOODS

If they are ready, try these few simple steps to start them on their way to being diaper-free!

Get a Potty Chair. Potty chairs are convenient for many reasons;  If you are like me and only have one bathroom, it doesn’t matter how long your toddler needs to sit and wait – the bathroom is free for others to use. It’s portable – to get my son to actually start doing a #2 on his potty, we sometimes sat it in front of the T.V. so he could watch his shows and not get frustrated. It’s theirs – we know how sometimes toddlers don’t like to share, so having their own personal chair makes them want to use it even more.

Schedule Potty Breaks. Before you start the training process, pay attention to the times that your toddler needs a diaper change – sometimes they’ll take a #2 at the same time daily, so planning ahead can definitely help the process. Be sure to account for times you might not be home, and be prepared for any ‘accidents’.

Give Rewards. This was always my kids favorite part (of course I think it’s most kids favorite!). Setting up a reward chart can be a big motivator for toddlers. My oldest loved candy, though she didn’t have it often. We set up her chart for after 3 times going potty, she got to pick a piece of candy from her ‘special’ candy bowl. My son was obsessed with Hot Wheels so after a certain amount of days he was dry, or did really well, he got a Hot Wheel. Rewards are sometimes like magic!

Try Pull-Ups® Training PantsNothing makes a toddler feel more grown and ready to use the potty than ‘underwear’ just like Mommy or Daddy. Pull-Up Training pants gives them their independence and gives you peace of mind from messy accidents.
