Kid Friendly Healthy Home Infographic

Busy moms want to provide a safe environment for their kids with as little fuss and fearmongering as possible, but a lot of articles about indoor pollution, toxins, and allergens are all about the dangers and short on solutions. This cute infographic is just the opposite. It gives you a quick and dirty rundown on exactly what items to evict from your home and tells you what to do instead. The graphic runs you through four of the most common toxins found in family homes: BPA plastics, toxic household cleaners, troublesome hand soaps, and chemical air fresheners.

BPA-containing plastics have been associated with everything from cancer to brain and behavioral issues in children. The graphic gives you a list of recycling numbers, so you’ll know exactly which plastics can cause problems and which ones to use instead. You’ll also learn how to read labels on household cleaners to spot the most dangerous chemicals, and what ingredients to stock up on if you want to make your own organic alternatives. Want more great advice? Keep your indoor air healthy by replacing your HVAC filters and having your equipment serviced instead of spraying chemical products into the air, and teach your kids how to wash their hands properly, so you can do away with antibacterial soaps.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by conflicting advice about indoor air quality, but this graphic makes creating a kid-friendly environment simple. Following the steps outlined here is an easy path to a healthier home.

How to Unblock a Clogged Toilet Myself

Blocked toilet – causes and solutions

Finding out that your toilet is blocked is not a pleasant experience. No-one wants to be stuck with a toilet that will not clear. It’s important that you try to resolve the issue as soon as you notice there is a problem with your toilet clearing when you flush. The longer you leave a blockage, the harder it is to deal with.

The good news is that you can normally deal with a blocked toilet yourself. We are going to talk about what can cause a toilet to become blocked in the first place. We are also going to give you some advice about how you can go about clearing a blockage once it happens.

Why does a toilet become blocked?

There is one main reason why toilet blockages occur. It’s the flushing of bulky items. It could be that your child has flushed a toy, or that someone has used, and flushed, too much toilet paper. Once the bulky item is flushed, it’s easy for it to become wedged in the toilet drain. This prevents anything else from travelling down the drain; hence your toilet no longer clears when you flush it.

If you notice any problems at all with the toilet clearing, you need to take action straight away.

What can you do to clear a blocked toilet?

We have said how important it is to deal with a blocked toilet quickly; but how do you do this? Let’s look at the actions you need to take.

The first thing to try is to use a plunger on the toilet. Remember that you need to plunge forcefully several times. If you do not have a plunger to hand, you can make your own tool. You just have to take a coat hanger and place a plastic bag over it. Make sure you tie the bag tightly. You can then use your self-made plunger to try and clear the blockage.

If using a plunger on the toilet does not work, you can try using a drain snake. You should be able to buy this implement from a local DIY store, or order one online. Using a drain snake enables you to gain access down the drain which makes it easier for you to remove the blockage. If you do not feel happy using a drain snake, or doing so is not successful, you can call a plumber in Mosman to help you. They can remove the blockage and return your toilet to full functionality.

If you discover that your toilet is blocked you should never hesitate to deal with the problem. In most cases, you should be able to clear the blockage yourself, by simply using a plunger. If this does not work, you can try using a drain snake, or you can call in the experts. Whatever you decide to do, you need to make sure that your toilet is cleared so that you can successfully flush it again.

The Mystery Behind Mystic Timbers: Kings Island’s New Roller Coaster

As you all know we here in the Higgins household are big fans of adventure – especially if it involves roller coasters. I’ve ridden every single roller coaster at  Kings Island at least a hundred times (no joke) and I’m always open to a new heart dropping speed and excitement (except maybe Drop Zone, I actually really lose my cool on that one!)

This year Kings Island raised the bar – with an all new wooden roller coaster, Mystic Timbers. Mystic Timbers is Kings Island’s 16th roller coaster – and 4th wood coaster. This makes the park top in it’s game, with nearly 19,000 feet in wooden coaster track – the most in the world! (Kings Island is known for setting records ,in fact the Beast which is just south of Mystic Timbers was built in 1979 – quite a good year if I do say so myself – and is still the world’s longest wooden coaster!)

With Mystic Timbers just waiting in line is an experience – voices come over the speakers warning you not to go in the shed, and just the right elements to give a little bit of fright/excitement to the ride.

Mystic Timbers feature three trains with the lead car design based on a 1960’s pick up truck – and will accommodate 24 passengers. (the line moves pretty quickly).

It has 16 ‘airtime’ hills that wind through wooded terrain and over water along a 3,265 foot track at speeds of 53 mph (though it feels a lot faster) and at the end – you can answer the mystery of ‘what’s in the shed’

SPOILER ALERT:
The ‘shed’ – which is also the ride transfer area – features a creative mix of lights, music, and video of some creepy creatures (but nothing too scary, though I think this ride would be super fun to ride in the dark!) There are 3 different versions of the “shed experience” so you can experience something new each time you ride.

Remember – Kings Island has a lot to offer, so plan on spending the whole day when you visit (or more than a day if you can) and visit the Soak City Water Park, Planet Snoopy for the kids – and special events all year long. If you are local check out the annual pass options! Kings Island is open for the season – check it out this Saturday at 10 a.m. (the weather is supposed to be amazing). Admission is $67 at the gate, $47.99 online. For hours and more information: visitkingsisland.com.

Take a Minute: Methods of Instant Stress Relief

When you’re stressed out, the problem can seem so intractable, it can feel as if there’s nothing for you to do but keep worrying. The problem with this approach to handling life, however, is that it conflates stress with the problems that cause it. They are not the same, however; you can get rid of the stress even when you still have the problem.

Different stress-relief activities work for different people. When you find one that does work for you, you’ll see that it takes no effort at all to relieve stress and that there is no reason to not lower your stress level several times a day.

First, identify unhealthy stress relief and then replace it

Plenty of people go with instant stress relief in the form of junk food, tobacco, alcohol or even aimless time on the phone. The stress relief that you get from these activities is illusory, however. The moment you stop, you are only left with guilt and even more stress as a result.

When you feel the need to reach out for unhealthy stress relief activity, all you need to do is to get up and do a few push-ups or do a couple of minutes on the treadmill. You can even turn on some music and dance. Not only will you come back feeling less stressed, you will feel good about yourself for what you just did.

Try a new stress-busting activity

A number of activities offer instant stress relief — yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, taking your dog for a walk or something like progressive muscle relaxation. It’s important to keep looking until you find something that truly appeals. For instance, many people these days are discovering that coloring books for adults (or an app equivalent like Coloring Book for Me & Mandala) is just the right kind of soothing activity that they need. These are actually quite the rage, and there is scientific evidence backing their use, as well.

Try art

In some ways, a coloring book for adults does deliver some of the benefits of engaging in artistic expression. If you’re artistically inclined and have a specific art that you love, however, giving it a go a few minutes several times a day can be a powerful way to clear your head. Art therapy is so powerful, it can help people with addictions and those who suffer from PTSD. If it’s stress that bothers you, there’s no doubt that art can help.

Attempt self-hypnosis

If you are capable of responding to self-hypnosis it’s worth a try. While you do need to train somewhat to use this method correctly, it isn’t hard to make a quick attempt to see what it feels like. The basic idea is to record a narrative that helps you beat stress and to play it in the background while you visualize relaxing thoughts. The narrative could be something that tells you how you’re going to work on your problems, and how relaxed and happy you are at the moment. You can even buy the stress-relief self-hypnosis CDs if you’d like to try it out with minimal effort.

Stress does have real, quantifiable effects on the health and your feelings of well-being. Taking stress-relief seriously, even if only on an experimental basis, can show you what you’re missing.
