How to Protect Your Eyes from Sun Damage

I wrote this review while participating in an Influencer campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and received a promotional item from Mom Central to thank me for participating.”

This summer we are heading out to hit the beaches – North and South. We will be visiting Maine and hitting the coast as well as visiting our favorite spot in Florida- Anna Maria Island. I would say a good 90% of our day (excluding sleeping) will be spent in the water. Before we leave and a few times during the day I lather the kids up with sunscreen. I don’t mind if they get a bit of sun, but we sure don’t want them burnt and being miserable the rest of the trip. We know the importance of sunscreen and how one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence can more then double the chances of developing melanoma later in life. We are, after all, doing what we can to protect our children. We make them wear seat belts, take them to the doctor for check-ups,  helmets when they are riding bikes and bug spray when we are camping. But until recently, I never gave much thought to protecting their eyes from sun damage.

As I started reading about the facts on the damage of UV rays to eyes, I was shocked. Why wasn’t I told before? Here’s some things I learned:

The Sun & Your Eyes: What You Need to Know

  • CUMULATIVE DAMAGE: Experts say it is difficult to isolate the exact amount of damage that Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) imposes on the eye over a long period of time. However, a number of studies have shown that the effects of UV radiation are mostly cumulative and may increase the chance of developing eye problems later in life, including cataracts, a leading cause of reduced vision in the United States.
  • IRREVERSIBLE: Short-term damage to the eyes may be hard to notice, but over the long-term, the sun can cause irreversible harm to all structures of the eye and surrounding tissue that are left unprotected or under-protected. These conditions may not manifest for years at which point the damage is already done and it is too late to reverse the effects of the sun. That’s why it is important to start protecting eyes from childhood.
  • CHILDREN, TEENS AT GREATER RISK OF EXPOSURE THAN ADULTS: Younger eyes are more susceptible to exposure to the sun’s harmful rays than adults. Children have larger pupils (allowing more light into their eyes), clearer lenses, and are outside without eye protection much more frequently and for longer periods than most adults.   It is estimated that a significant amount of lifetime exposure to UV rays may occur by age 18 and that children’s annual dose of UV radiation is three times that of adults.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE UV EXPOSURE – Although direct light from the sun itself can be damaging to eyes, reflected ultraviolet (UV) rays from surfaces such as grass, soil, dry sand, water, and snow can also be harmful.  UV protection also is important on a cloudy day as the sun’s rays can pass through thin clouds, exposing your eyes to harmful UV radiation
  • SUNGLASSES ALONE SOMETIMES ARE NOT ENOUGH:While most sunglasses can help block UV rays from entering through the lenses, most frame styles do not prevent rays from reaching the eyes from the sides, top, and bottom of the glasses. Hats with brims offer no protection from UV rays reflected up from ground surfaces such as pavement, sand, and water.
  • UV BLOCKING CONTACT LENSES can provide an important level of additional protection from UV exposure. Not all contact lenses offer UV protection, and, of those that do, not all provide similar absorption levels. ACUVUE® is the only major brand of contact lenses which blocks approximately 97%of UV-B and 81% of UV-A rays as standard across the entire range of its products.*
  • ACHIEVING A COMPREHENSIVE MEASURE OF UV PROTECTION: UV absorbing contact lenses are not substitutes for devices like UV-blocking sunglasses as they do not completely cover the eye or the surrounding area. For more comprehensive UV protection, UV-blocking contact lenses should be worn as an added layer of protection in conjunction with high-quality UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.

How to protect your eyes from UV

The best way to protect your eyes against UV damage is to use a UV filter that will stop most of the harmful rays entering your eyes. Glasses and contact lenses can have built in UV protection.

• All ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses have UV blocking filters* embedded into the lens material, which will help protect you throughout the year, not just on the sunny summer days.

• Sunglasses alone will not block all UV rays, as sunlight can still reach the eyes through the sides of the sunglasses. The use of a UV blocking contact lens will give you additional protection.

• Not all sunglasses will have the same level of protection. An effective pair of sunglasses should be able to block out both UVA and UVB rays. While all sunglasses block out UVB radiation, a good pair should also be measured to block out 99% to 100% of UVA rays.

• Pick large lenses that fit close to the eyes. To prevent sunlight reaching through the sides of the sunglasses, use wrap around style glasses.

• Expensive designer sunglasses or polarizing lenses are not necessarily guaranteed to be effective against the harmful rays of the sun.

• Ordinary sunglasses – the kind without certified UVA/UVB protection – can cause more damage to the eyes than not. This is because the dark lenses cause the pupils of the eyes to dilate, letting in more UVA rays that will damage the retina and lens of the eyes.

• Even children need to protect their eyes. Like your skin, most of the sun damage to your eyes is accrued in a person’s early developmental years. So sun protection is vital for young people.

• Sunlight is at its most intense between the hours of 10 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon, which means that ultraviolet exposure to the skin is most dangerous then. However, recent research shows that the eyes are most at risk during mid-morning and the late afternoon so make sure your eyes are well protected all day.

• Reflected light can cause eye burn. At high altitudes, snow-covered mountains, sandy beaches and reflective bodies of water like lakes, rivers and the sea, sun exposure is at its most intense

• Good nutrition can also help protect your eyes.  Lutein which is found in foods such as kale, spinach, broccoli and many yellow or orange fruits and vegetables works as an antioxidant for the protection of cells. It helps prevent harmful blue light from reaching – and thus causing damage – to the sensitive back tissue of the retina. Lutein can thus help support the protection offered by UV blocking contact lenses and spectacles.

Identity Theft: YES it Can Happen to You!

This is a sponsored post on behalf of LifeLock. Though I was compensated for my time, all opinions are my own.

AdvertisementI have worked in the insurance industry for over 10 years, and in those years I have seen a lot of crazy stuff. People opening their door during a car wash ripping the door completely off the hinges (and no, he couldn’t remember why), wanting the company to pay for the T.V. they broke during a game of Wii Sports, and a lady convinced that her neighbor was trying to off her by coming in her house and moving things around (yes, I’m not sure how I could of helped either!) I’ve also seen a lot of sad things as well – houses burnt to the ground, people loosing family in car accidents, and I’ve seen a TON of people become aware that their identity had been stolen.

One particular story I remember is a man who called my office with the opening line of, “you are never going to believe this, but..” I have heard that line a few times in my career, but this one takes the cake. This gentlemen went on to tell me that his old roommate from many years ago had stolen his identity – and he had been working feverishly the past 5 years to get it back. The reason he was calling me was because this identity theft had just bought a home and auto insurance policy with me – and we were completely unaware that he wasn’t who he said he was. The gentleman actually received a letter from our company stating that someone had used his information and alerted him to call our office if it wasn’t him – he called me, unsure what to do. He had been making police reports, reported to the credit bureau, but somehow his old roommate was able to buy a house with his identity!

I remember being a bit scared through the process of helping him file the right reports, and do what we could to help him find the perpetrator and reclaim his identity.  I mean, weren’t we all well beyond this? I thought the world was more technologically advanced than this? It really could happen to anyone.

I knew I needed to do something to not only protect my identity, but my husband’s as well. We had worked very hard to recover our credit after our previous relationships, and I wasn’t going to let someone steal all my hard work! So I did a search and ran across the  LifeLock Site . Maleficent Movie Synopsis & Review

I have to admit when I first saw the previews for Maleficent I was unsure about if I wanted to really see it, or take the kids. I also am not a big fan of the ‘old’ Angeline Jolie (I know I am not alone in this. She is beautiful and talented, but I just wasn’t a fan. Home wrecker, and “weirdo” – do we not remember the blood necklaces with good ol’ Billy Bob Thorton?) Plus how could going to see a ‘dark’ movie give me the warm fuzzies that other Disney movies do? I don’t go to sad movies, I don’t go to scary movies, and I definitely do not take my kids to them. But I decided to put my prejudiced aside and go in with an open mind. Disney surely wouldn’t disappoint right?

image001 (1)

SPOILER ALERT: If you are going to see the film and want to go in knowing only what the previews have showed you, stop reading now =) If you are O.K. with a bit of background and then of course my personal opinion, keep reading:

The movie begins with Maleficent as a young fairy, happily protecting her forest and taking care of her kind. A happy, smiling young girl she meets a human boy, Stefan, who snuck into her forest to steal. Maleficent befriends the boy and they grow close through the years-with Stefan giving Maleficent what she thought was true loves first kiss. Eventually Stefan is tempted by power and status, never returning to the forest, and breaking Maleficent’s heart.
Years later the King, driven by the need for power tries to take over the forest and is met by brut force of Maleficent and her forest ‘crew’. The King put a price on Malefiecent’s head – promising the kingdom and his daughter to whomever could defeat the powerful fairy. Stefan knowing he had the key to Maleficent’s heart heads to the forest to deliver the head of the fairy to his King, but in weakness cannot murder her, but takes something almost as cherished – her wings.

At this point I knew where the story was going – how Maleficent became evil, and wanted to hurt the King in the worst way. I do wish that they would of given more of the turning of Maleficent. More of a history between the couple, more of Stefan’s past – more of who Maleficent really was. The turning from good to evil happened in just a few minutes on screen. I would of loved to see more of the process; but I guess since we all knew the story they didn’t feel like we needed anymore? Either way, moving on…

maleficent

Maleficent hears the news that the new King & his Queen are expecting a child – a daughter. Maleficent, like in the original Sleeping Beauty, shows up uninvited to the christening and curses the child.  She will prick her finger on a spinning wheel before night falls on her 16th birthday and fall into a death like sleep – only ‘true loves first kiss’ will be able to awaken her. She curses the child and curses the curse – that it cannot be reversed.

The King, in paranoid anguish, sends his daughter to live with 3 fairies who are trying to make amends with the humans.  He orders them to keep and protect her and bring her home the day after her 16th birthday. The 3 fairies in Maleficent remind me of the 3 Stooges – funny, kind, but ones that should never be left alone with children. Maleficent finds the child, lovingly calling her ‘the beast’ and keeps her protected from harm while the fairies argue among  themselves. Aurora dubs her as her fairy godmother and enjoys spending time in the forest with Maleficent and the mystical creatures. My favorite part of this movie is you can see, you can feel Maleficent grow to love this girl. She see’s herself in her – the carefree, happy, loving child that she once was in Aurora.

Maleficent realizes she made a mistake and tries to remove the curse – but to no avail. She makes her way to the Castle to do whatever she has to – even sacrifice herself – for the life of Aurora.

I won’t give away the ending – though I do feel like the movie could of given us a bit more background to the story of Maleficent & Stefan, as well as how her love grew for Aurora, this is a Disney film. Though it wasn’t animated I do believe the primary audience focus was children. My kids enjoyed this movie immensely and talked about it for days. I enjoyed the movie – I loved seeing the ‘other side of the story’ , I loved seeing the WHY she was evil, and that deep down she still had a heart. Like all Disney movies, there are lessons to be learned!

Though she looks pretty darn scary on the previews, my son who is a bit sensitive to this kind of thing had no problem – even with the 3D Imax screening. There was no foul language, but those who are sensitive to magic/fairies/all things mystical may want to be cautious. Some violence, but not a lot of blood. I’ve seen kids movies with a lot worse!

Though it’s not a solid hit like Frozen this will be a movie that will definitely be in any movie buffs collection (including my own)!
