DIY Tips to Painting Old Bathroom Tile

To me two of the most important rooms in your house are the kitchen and of course, the bathroom. These are rooms that we spent a lot of our time in, where our guest will visit at one time or another, a place we went to be proud of. I remember one of the houses we looked at when house hunting and one bathroom still had some pretty retro green tile on the floor and the walls. YUCK! Keeping our bathrooms updated & modern can get quite expensive especially if you are looking at replacing flooring, walls, and even tubs, toilets and sinks. But you can give your bathroom the make-over you desire without breaking the bank. Something as simple as an changing the tile, or updating the paint color or finish completely, or just adding smaller designs or accents to the tile, can give your bathroom a refreshing update.

Painting tile is not for the faint of heart though – this isn’t like painting the walls in your kitchen. It requires much greater attention to detail, considerable down time while the paint cures, (i.e, I hope you have another bathroom, or you’re going to be visiting your neighbors a few times a day) and ample ventilation. If you think your up to the challenge, here are a few tips to make your project a success.

No matter which method you choose, always start with extremely squeaky clean tile and use high quality primer, epoxy paint and brushes. Epoxy paint adheres to the surface and provides a smooth, waterproof coating that can stand up to a high humidity environment (i.e., hot, steamy showers!)

Open any windows and turn on the exhaust fan, if you have one. Place drop-cloths and apply masking tape to any areas you don’t want to want paint all over. I would highly recommend that even if you think that you are extra cautious to do this on everything (yes, I am speaking from experience). Then clean, clean, CLEAN! Rinse the ceramic tile thoroughly and dry it with a lint-free towel.

Sand like a crazy person.  With a DIY epoxy kit, your job is only going to be as good as the time you spend cleaning and sanding; a rough surface is your primary source of adhesion. DO NOT skimp on this step! You WILL be sorry if you do!  The better your prep, the more satisfied you will be. You don’t want to be doing your business, or worse yet, having a friend doing theirs, and look around to see what a shoddy job you did. Time & effort with this project are essential!

Wear a respirator mask and use a fan. Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate. Epoxy is vile stuff to breathe in. Wear rubber gloves. You don’t want this on you either!

Use a spray gun. Brushing and rolling can work, but a spray gun gives the best finish — use a pro-grade model if you can swing it.

Don’t use regular spray paint. It will look like your plastic lawn furniture that you let the kids paint last summer –  splurge for the good stuff! I promise it will be worth it. Also don’t use any type of water based paint either – you are painting a hot, steamy, wet bathroom…so use common sense

Don’t take a long, hot bath — at least not for a while. Follow instructions about how long the epoxy should cure before you use the tub, and if you can wait even longer, do. Some impatient painters end up with wrinkly surfaces – and a lot of frustration.

After you paint and update the tile, remember to accessorize! The right bathroom accessories can make or break your finished look.

5 Simple Ways to Remove a Stuck Screw

As I am going about my house working on getting each room cleaned, organized and updated I’ve started to feel really good about this big project that I’ve taken on.to have my house in order and not stress about all the things I need to get done. I’m spring cleaning in a way, which I am hoping with a consistent regiment of chores and days set aside for DIY projects each month (like making my own DIY cigar humidor), that I won’t have to stress or feel that my house is in shambles and I can take the time to relax and enjoy time with the kids. This past week I started the process in my kitchen, which is a huge project to take on. Our house was built in the 1800’s, so we have plaster walls instead of dry wall, and it drives me crazy! The walls don’t seem as polished and smooth as drywall and the worst part? Trying to hang anything. After 3 years in our house I finally decided that I needed to hang my cute kitchen curtains, the blinds alone were just not cutting it. I had procrastinated because the same exact project that I had taken on in the living room had taken me what felt like forever, and I hadn’t had the patience or time to worry about the kitchen.  As I began my project my heart sunk because I realized that someone else had previously tried to hang kitchen curtains as well – and failed miserably. There were at least a half a dozen broken, stuck, or painted over screws where I wanted to hang my curtain rod. So I took to the books (and the internet) to find the best ways to remove stuck screws and here’s what I found:

.how_to_remove_a_stuck_screw

1. Avoid making the problem worse. If the tool you are using is slipping, stop using it! If it continues to slip it will wear down the screw head and make it harder to remove (and maybe impossible). Make sure you are going in the correct direction – counterclockwise – and press down hard as you are unscrewing will help prevent slipping, and causing more damage.  Sometimes using a manual screwdriver instead of a power drill – not only to avoid making the screw or the wall more damaged -will exert more torque that you need to remove a recalcitrant screw. Some drills will actually lose their grip on the screwdriver bit if you put too much torque on them.

2.Use a screw extractor. The right tool for the job if the screw head is just worn, is called a screw extractor. This is essentially a screwdriver or screwdriver bit which has strong, rough metal threads right on the tip. These are intended to burrow into the metal of the screw head and get stuck there so you can put some torque on it. These worked great for the majority of the stuck nails in my wall. You can pick up some great screw extractor sets like the one I got on GotStock.com

3. The rubber band ‘trick’.  Often placing a broad, flat rubber band between the screw and the screwdriver will work if you put enough pressure on it, and rotate it slowly. The rubber band acts to fill in the space that the screwdriver cannot grip. (An alternative to a rubber band is a small piece of masking tape, whereby the adhesive side is pressed against the screw head)

4. Try a socket wrench. If you need a lot of torque because you are hurting your hand or you are not getting results you want, the best tool is a socket wrench. This gives you  6 inches or more of lever arm rather than the half-inch or so a screwdriver will give you. This majorly increases the amount of torque and pressure you can put on the screw.

5. As a last resort – drill it out. If all else fails, it is possible to drill out the screw with a power drill and bit the same size as the screw’s shaft. This should remove the  thread. From here you can try to replace the old screw with a screw of a slightly larger size, use nuts and bolts instead of the screw (this will entail some welding, which is wayy over my level of expertise).

I am far from an expert, but these tips helped me complete my project – and keep my sanity. What are your tips for removing stuck screws?

May We Never Forget: 9/11

Each year on 9/11 for the past 13 years I have watched people post on Facebook about where they were, and what they were thinking on that tragic day so many years ago. Each time I read someones story, I am reminded of my own, burnt into my mind, etched into my soul for what I am sure will be the rest of my life.  We all have a story of that day — and wanted to share mine. May We Never Forget 9/11.

September 11, 2001 I was 21 years old. I was 3 1/2 months pregnant with my first child. I was working at a church daycare center with 3 & 4 year old (my most favorite age). I was wearing a light blue dress shirt and my stretchy black dress pants because my regular pants were just starting to feel a bit uncomfortable. I was standing out in our playground with another teacher watching the kids play on the swings and run around just having a good time when another teacher came running out to tell us what happened. We didn’t want to scare the children, but the news was urging everyone to take cover and just about that time a few military jets flew over our heads. My heart sank into my stomach. For one split second I imagined what life was like for our ancestors in all the wars that took place in their countries. The fear of being absolutely helpless and scared, your mind wandering – worry about family & friends consuming you. I didn’t have much time to continue in that nightmare since we needed to keep a happy face and get the children inside.

May We Never Forget 9/11

May We Never Forget 9/11

We took the children into the gym and allowed them free time – as the teachers gathered around the one T.V. to watch what we thought was the end of the world – the towers falling, people running covered in blood and ash, hearing the screams in the background. I picked up my phone and called my boyfriend right away; how selfish were we bringing a child into this dark scary world?! What if this was the start of an epidemic? To be honest I don’t remember what he said…I needed to move onto the next phone calls, call my Mom, my sister and my Dad to make sure they were O.K.

How was this even possible? I grew up in the late 80’s and 90’s – we were the United States of America, strong, proud, and untouchable. Who would dare have the audacity to carry out such an evil plot? Was this just the beginning? Were there other airplanes that were hijacked and we just didn’t know yet? Were they coming our way? Was our country on the brink of destruction?

Days went by and we talked, watched, and read about nothing else. We started to hear the stories of the brave passengers who took down the hijacker and sacrificed their lives to save others – the police & firemen who risked theirs to try and save as many people as possible. They stood in the face of danger, looked death right in the eye..and just kept on. May We Never Forget 9/11.

May We Never Forget 9/11-a

Now I was pregnant, so maybe my memory eludes me – but I don’t remember a whole lot of blame shifting going on during this. For once in my life it seemed like all race, religions, genders, and ages came together as a nation. We started to seek God again – I heard people pray that I didn’t think knew how to. We were friends and not enemies, we were kind instead of cruel, we stood together.  And we stood tall. We had pride in our country & about our freedom, our nation. We couldn’t believe that someone dare set foot in our country and try to take that away. We were angry – but for good reason. I hadn’t never felt so patriotic in my life as I did those few weeks after the towers came tumbling down.

May We Never Forget 9/11-9_11

I’m not sure what has exactly happened to our country in the last 13 years – 9/11 seems to be forgotten except on the anniversary, and we are raging war among ourselves, leaving our nation exposed to the evil & turmoil of the outside world. I wish we could all really look back, dig deep into our hearts to remember those feelings we felt – whether it be fear, pain, or anger, even pride or patriotism, so that we can continue to love, protect and preserve this great country for generations to come.
