Why You Need to Go See The Boxtrolls

We have two very favorite past times in my house that we all enjoy. One is reading, and the second is watching movies together. Though we all have other hobbies, they nearly never collide. I enjoy my sweepstakes, my oldest is obsessed with music, my daughter with soccer, my son Lego and video games. So having family reading time, and spending rainy days watching movies has become a family bonding time that I’ve really come to enjoy.

My girls’ and I (especially my oldest) love reading the ‘books that become movies’ before we see the movie. We compare the differences, and we have a lot of great conversations after the movie. Normally these are movies and books that my youngest can’t really participate in. That is, until we found out about  The Boxtrolls.

#TheBoxtrolls

The Boxtrolls, like so many other great movies, got their start from a book. Here Be Monsters a part of the The Ratbridge Chronicles written by Alan Snow is the basis for The Boxtrolls movie. I was so excited to have a book/movie that my son could be included in!
Let me give you a basic rundown of The Boxtrolls.

Characters:
Eggs
: He’s an 11 yr old boy who has been raised by the Boxtrolls. He is one of them – he eats bugs, hates to take baths, and builds things out of junk. He believes he is a Boxtroll though he doesn’t look like one. He is braver than his brothers, and a bit impulsive.

Fish: Fish is the Boxtroll that brought Eggs underground. He is Eggs ‘father’ and has always taught him to run and hide from danger.
Winnie: A girl who has always been obsessed with the Boxtrolls and the stories of them kidnapping children. Lavished upon with gifts and leading a pampered life, she is shocked to discover the truth about the Boxtrolls
Shoe: A grouchy Boxtroll who can’t help but swipe a bolt, or nut or anything shiny. He is Fish’s best friend, and has grown to love Eggs over the years.
Oil Can: The smallest and cutest Boxtroll, Oil Can can’t help but oil everything mechanical that he can with the little blue oil can he carries around with him.
Sparky: Very quiet, and not overly impressed by anything. Has a tendency to get electrocuted every time he tries to fix something.

The beginning. Ten years ago Archibald Snatcher visits Lord Portley-Rind, informing him that the Boxtrolls have kidnapped a baby boy. Snatcher strikes a deal with Portley-Rind; if he exterminates the Boxtrolls, Snatcher will become a member of the White Hats, an elite club of cheese lovers that serves as Cheesebridge’s city council. That same night, the Boxtrolls come out and scavenge through trash cans looking for things they can use in their inventions. Some of them get cornered by Snatcher and his henchmen, Mr. Trout, Mr. Pickles, and Mr. Gristle. Only Fish and Shoe manage to escape to the underground cavern where the Boxtrolls live, where Fish is a father figure to Eggs, a baby boy living there. As the years pass, Eggs grows up and the number of Boxtrolls dwindles as Snatcher and his men capture more and more of them.
Now. There are very few Boxtrolls left – and one  day the ‘kidnapped’ baby boy otherwise known as “Egg”  realizes he is human, and ventures out into the world above to save his friends.

The story of acceptance, of bravery, of love is written all over the pages and seen all over the screen of the Boxtrolls. They love each other – no matter if another is different. They took in Eggs as one of their own – They didn’t treat him differently, or love him less. They accepted him as family, and from the beginning that’s what he was.
Though it may seem sad that Eggs missed the opportunity to know his parents, to be raised as a ‘boy’ and not a ‘boxtroll’ he made the best of it – and in fact, was probably a better person because of it. He has a support system, family who loved him, who was there for him no matter what.
I love the imagination and creativity the Boxtrolls use. They turn garbage into treasures, they use their mind to come up with great ideas on how to entertain themselves, to take care of themselves. These characteristics alone make me wish that their were a few Boxtrolls in my neighborhood to teach my kids a thing or two!

This is the movie to see with your kids. No matter what they are going through, they will relate.

We’ve read the book, and we can’t wait to go this weekend and see the movie.

The Boxtrolls are coming to theaters September 26th! Check your local listings for times!

My nephew was lucky enough to meet a few Boxtrolls at the Rusty Bucket in Mason today! He’s excited to see the movie tomorrow!!

Top Tips for Homework Success

Homework can sometimes be overwhelming for kids – with hours and hours spent each day at school, the last thing that a kid wants to do when they get home is sit down and do more work. Introducing positive habits to your children is important to put them on a path to be more productive and peaceful. To have a more pleasant homework session try these tips:

top_tips_for_homework_success

Organize – Make sure to organize your homework list. Estimate how long it will take to complete each homework assignment, and do the hardest work first. That way it will get easier as you go along. If motivation is low, pick up the easier tasks or a portion of a task to energize yourself. It is a good idea to do computer work first then do work in order of your classes.

Gather Supplies & Find a Quiet Work Space – Try working at desk or table, but try to stay out of your bedroom or anywhere there is a T.V. or radio on to keep you distracted. Your work space should always be tidy and organized, so that you don’t lose your work or get unorganized. You can even make it easier by studying flashcards, even virtual ones like on cram.com.  Make sure you have good lightening, and have all your supplies such as pencils, calculators, etc so you can complete your homework.

Plan Out How Long to Take to Get the Homework Done – Don’t waste time – you can’t get it back! Schedule time for yourself to get everything done – you can’t rewind the clock! Don’t procrastinate and make you regret it later.

Remove Any Sources of Distraction – Remove all sources of distraction especially your cell phone, and your computer (unless you need your computer for your homework), turn off the T.V., the radio, and let your family know that you are studying so they don’t distract you.

If you are someone who gets distracted, follow these steps:

  • Decide exactly what part of task you are focusing on, one at a time.
  • Get a timer, set it for a short time, e.g. 5 or 10 minutes, and when it goes off, just check yourself to see that you are still focused on the goal.
  • Don’t waste your time and energy getting too annoyed with yourself if you get distracted – just re-focus your attention, once you get engaged with what you are doing you will be fine.
  • If you realize your attention is wandering over and over, work out why you are getting stuck with your work – you could write it down as a question.

Worried About Getting Osteoarthritis? Check Out These Practical Prevention Tips

Osteoarthritis is one of those medical conditions that a broad section of people suffers from around the world. It is a disability that can have a negative impact on your life. It can force you to transform what you do in your everyday life, much to your protest.

It is estimated that more than 27 million people in the United States suffer from osteoarthritis. And as the population of the US rises, that figure is also sure to rise too. If you want to be one of the lucky few that don’t suffer from osteoarthritis, here are some practical prevention tips.

Lose weight

One thing that can add excess stress to the joints in your body is being overweight. To prevent osteoarthritis, it is important that you maintain a healthy body weight. There are plenty of websites that can tell you what your ideal weight should be.
Your knees are the weakest points in your body, and they often have to handle a force of up to six times your body weight.
A healthy eating regime involving a calorie-controlled diet is one way to lower the risk of osteoarthritis.

Get plenty of regular exercise

As part of your calorie-controlled diet, you should get plenty of exercise on a regular basis. The thing about exercise is that it can help you to build up your muscles and burn off fat. The result is that you end up with a fit and healthy body!
If you are unsure how to exercise, I recommend signing up to your local gym. They have fitness instructors that can work with you to create an exercise plan. That way, you can build up the amount of exercise you do over a period.
The last thing you want to do is do too much in a short space of time! That’s why you need expert guidance. Other ways that you can introduce gentle exercise to your life include going for walks, or even cycling in your local area.

Maintain good posture

One thing you should always do is maintain a good posture regardless of whether you are sitting or standing.
By aligning your joints in the correct manner, you are promoting good posture. For instance, do you spend most of your day sitting down at a desk? If so, follow these tips for proper posture:

  • Align your butt to the back of the chair;
  • Make sure your back is straight;
  • Your knees should be at 90-degree angles;
  • Your feet should be flat on the floor.

Any deviance of the above will add extra stress to your joints. The result? A whole world of pain!

Don’t avoid your pain

The last piece of advice I can give you is to not ignore your body when it tells you that you are in pain! When you feel pain, your body is telling you that you are doing too much, and you need to stop.

Listen to your body and stop whatever it is that is causing you pain!

Healthy Fruit Dip with Monk Fruit In The Raw

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Monk Fruit In The Raw. I received product samples to facilitate my post as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and in observance of this month and the continuous effort of our family to life a healthier lifestyle, our family is working on reducing our sugar intake. Sugar is one of the hardest things for my family to give up. Though we haven’t given it up completely  – we do try to watch our sugar intake any time we get a craving.

Monk Fruit In The Raw Product Image

One way that we’ve been able to watch our sugar, is modifying some of our favorite recipes with Monk Fruit In The Raw which is a wholesome, zero-calorie sweetener, made with real fruit. It has a simple sweet taste that can be used in any recipe that calls for sugar without reducing taste. You can actually purchase it in packets for drinks, or in bakers bags for baking. It’s a easy, convenient way to substitute a healthier alternative to sweet drinks, snacks & desserts. (*Most baking recipes do require the sugar for the right volume and texture, in these instances replace 1/2 of the regular sugar with Monk Fruit In The Raw for best results).

One of our favorite family snacks is fruit dip. My kids will eat any type of fruit that you put out there if you add some fruit dip with it! But with all the sugar in your basic dip recipe,  they might as well be eating a cookie. So I made it my mission to find a better way to make our fruit dip healthy. I actually couldn’t believe how easy it was – and how many different options I had using Monk Fruit In The Raw.

healthy_fruit_dip

Now I came up with a few recipes of my own, and I also found a few great combinations online and I tried them ALL. They all tasted pretty good, but had different textures and levels of sweetness, so I suggest you mix small batches together until you find your favorite. The one I prefer, the kids don’t  care for, and the one the kids prefer is a bit too sweet for my taste. Either way any of the recipes are a healthier version of a favorite snack.

Recipe 1

This one is quite simple – mix part fat free (or light) sour cream with 1/4 cup of Monk Fruit In The Raw. Refrigerate for about an hour, and enjoy!

Recipe 2

Mix 1 package (8 oz) fat free cream cheese (softened), 1 package (8 oz) sugar free cool whip, and 1/2 cup of Monk Fruit In the Raw. Mix well, refrigerate.

Recipe 3

This is my favorite – mix 2 cups Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup Monk Fruit In The Raw and a dollop of cool whip (or you can add more, depending on the level of sweetness you are trying to acquire). Refrigerate before eating. LOVE this one!

Any of the above recipes are great with strawberries, apples, bananas, grapes, kiwi, peaches, and any other fruit you can get your hands on!

Not only did I find a great edible recipe to use Monk Fruit In The Raw, but I also found a great beauty DIY Organic Sugar Scrub as well that I had to share!

You Will Need:
1/4 Cup Monk Fruit In The Raw
2 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil
a bowl & a spoon
**Optional for scent: a essential oil of your choice

In bowl mix Monk Sugar In The Raw with Coconut Oil – be sure the oil is in more of a solid state. It doesn’t work well if it’s in liquid form.
Blend well, and add 2 drops of the essential oil of your choice (my favorite is lemon).
Apply to dry, rough skin. (Think elbows, hands, heels, feet, knees, etc)
Rub in circular motion until coconut oil is a liquid state.
Rinse and pat dry.

Your skin will be feeling fresh and clean!

*Be sure to store leftover sugar scrub in an airtight container to keep it from drying out!
