Know Your Dog with Wisdom Panel 3.0

One of the most frustrating things about adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue is the inability to give the adoptee a straight answer on exactly what their new bundle of joy is mixed with. Not only for nutritional reasons, training, and overall health, but even for other important reasons, like homeowners insurance. Knowing and understanding the breeds that make up your new best friend, makes it easier to pinpoint care needed, and financial responsibility.

Working in the insurance industry I have had more than my share of calls from clients asking if their dogs were covered for an liability issues – it seems that some cities make their rounds to record, and register any dogs deemed dangerous. In the Southern part of Ohio, dogs such as pitbulls, and rottweilers are not allowed to be owned in city lines. So any type of dog that has a resemblance to these dogs are singled out, and the owners are forced to carry liability insurance on them. Certain insurance providers, mine included, will not insure these types of dogs, and will cancel your policy unless you  can provide  proof that your pet is less than a certain percentage of this ‘dangerous’ animal.

In my experience getting one of these letters from a licensed vet is  nearly impossible; since they can only give visual identification and it’s only accurate about 25% of the time, most vets do not want to risk confirming  or denying the dogs DNA.  Leaving the owner scrambling for coverage, and sometimes causing a financial burden.

That is why I am so excited about Mars Veterinary launching their revolutionary product for canine DNA testing the Wisdom Panel® 3.0Accuracy of the test is nearly 90%, and only takes a few weeks to get the test results back.

The kit includes:

  • DNA cheek swabs – all for use on one dog
  • Drying insert for swabs
  • Pre-paid return shipping box

Visit www.WisdomPanel.com for more information and to purchase a kit.

  • December 5: Holiday Pet Festival in Scottsdale, AZ – swabbing http://holidaypetfestival.com/
    • For all events that allow dogs, consumers can swab onsite at event for a discounted price of $39.99. For those wanting to take home a kit, they can be purchased for the discounted price of $49.99 (MSRP $84.99).

Our rescue pet, Buddy, is one of the examples of what we believe to be mistaken identity to some. When we adopted Buddy we were told he was a boxer/shepherd mix. After research, and a lot of opinions, it has came to our attention that our Buddy may very well be more pit than boxer. I  cannot WAIT to get the DNA test kit back to see what he is! This will  make such a difference when it comes back, when it come to nutrition, behavioral issues, and more!

BuddyThe Wisdom Panel® 3.0 is not only breed screening, but medical applications as well with the new MDR1 Genetic Mutation screening. MDR1 (Multi-drug resistance) is a genetic mutation found in some herding and sighthound breeds, as well as many mixed-breed dogs. The MDR1 gene is what is responsible for the production of P-glycoprotein which is a drug transport pump that has an important role in limiting drug absorption and distribution (especially in the brain) and enhances the excretion/elimination of many drugs used in dogs.

Dogs with the MDR1-mutation may have severe adverse reactions to some common drugs, so it is important to test mixed-breed (and purebreds with the high-propensity breeds) dogs and for owners to share results with their veterinarian so they can provide the dog with for the best possible care. For more information on breeds and drugs affected by the MDR1 mutation, visit www.wisdompanel.com/MDR1_Disease_Screening.

No More TMI about Bladder Leakage

When I was younger I would laugh when my Mom would turn red faced and embarrassed talking to my Aunt, my sister and myself about having issues with LBL (light bladder leakage). I’d tease her that she was getting old and falling apart, and light-hearted (but mean)  teasing only a young teenager can get away with.

All these years later – too many to count – the shoe is on the other foot as my kids laugh at me when I complain I need to grab a panty liner, or go  change because I had LBL. The first time it happened to me was not long after my oldest was born – I was working out on the treadmill, trying to get back in shape after using my pregnancy as excuse to eat like a glutton, where I was pushing myself to run again, not just merrily walk on the treadmill. I pushed the speed to the highest my cheap-at-home-treadmill would go and I gave it my all. At that time my goal was go to full force for 2-minutes at a time and then slow down to get my heart rate normal again, then do it again (it actually did really great helping with my endurance and all that). Anyway, then it happened -somewhere between 50 seconds and that 2 minute mark, I felt a warm liquid run down my leg.

Yeah. That. It was the first time, but not the last. I was thankful I wasn’t at the gym or running out in public when it happened, but what could I do to prevent such mishaps in the future??

I knew that Poise made a Very Light Absorbency Liner that could help me avoid that conversation, or any other embarrassment associated with LBL – but it’s not like I just wanted to walk up in the store and put those on the counter. It reminds me of those shows and commercials where the cashier will call out over the intercom to get a price check on a very personal product -well, I live in a small town, and I didn’t want that to happen to me.

So of course I did my research, and found that since I am a Sam’s Club Member I can take advantage of the benefits of their Subscription Service with discreet shipping and Club Pickup. No worries

Cash Back Rewards for the Lazy Shopper

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Everywhere Agency. Though I was compensated for my time, all opinions are my own.

If you know me at all,  you know I have a passion for shopping. Like I seriously get a thrill out of finding a good deal – (as you can see below, the “Shopping is My Cardio” shirt I got at Macy’s this past Black Friday for an uber deal – in addition to my cash back from Regions, but well go into that in a minute). Shopping is seriously a hobby for me – you should see my kids closets!

Shopping_is_my_cardio_finalNow I know there are a ton of deal bloggers out there who will give you all kinds of tricks and tips for getting the best deals on pretty much anything you need to shop for.. and that is awesome, seriously. But ain’t nobody got time for that. OK, maybe people do, but personally it just doesn’t make it to the top of my to do list. I have tried it before – like go to this site to get this % back, then come back here and get this code, then enter it here, and mail it to your Aunt, and then buy this gift card, then use it to buy this product. Ugh. I just can’t – that’s too much like work to me, and I want to enjoy shopping. If I wanted to work, well, that’s what I would do instead of shop =)

So when I want to save money while shopping, I want it to be easy peasy. Like going to Kohls and having a sale and using my credit card to get an extra 20% off. And I mean the in-store discount, not that I have to bring that blasted coupon along, because I ALWAYS forget it at home, without fail. Or  here’s my reward card (or more than likely my phone number, because my card is at home too, along with that coupon) and BAM! Deal! I mean I want to save as much money as the next guy – but please please make it easy for me!

regions_cash_back_rewards2

So when I hear about Cash Back offers, especially on debit cards  (because, hello, we are trying to pay off our credit card debt) I get extremely excited. I’m shopping anyway, and you are going to reward me for paying upfront for it? I’ll take two!

Regions_cash_back_rewards

I won’t incriminate myself by sharing all the awesome deals I got this past weekend… Let’s just say I saved enough to splurge on myself – which doesn’t happen that often!

Dear_Lord

Regions Bank is offering an awesome Cash Back Rewards program that will leave you speechless. Saving up to 15% cashback with your purchases – (see all the details here).

I love that I can save money on purchases without any effort on my part – more money to spend next time! It’s super easy to use since you can just use the app or the website from your phone (or laptop, if you are shopping online at home), and it’s safe. (that’s one of the first things I check!) The deals offered are tailored towards you, to places you love and already shop at – so this is really the lazy girls way to save!

If you don’t have a Regions Bank near you, be sure to check with your bank to see if they have a similar program.

How to Get Your Kids to Eat Their Veggies #BEFlavorFull

Getting the kids to eat their veggies can be quite a  challenge – I remember myself as a kid sitting at the table “until I finished my vegetables” and my stubborn self sitting there until bedtime. Unfortunately this is yet another trait of mine that I wish my kids didn’t inherit – but did. Their pure stubbornness, along with my busy schedule has always kept their meals lacking veggies -and me patience.

We all have to agree that plain veggies can be bland and boring  – which would explain both mine and my kids unwillingness to empty our plates, until recently – which is why we love Birds Eye® Flavor Fulls

Homework Help on the Go with Mentored

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Mentored.com

I would say that most of you that have been following me for awhile probably are well aware that reading and writing classes were my favorite when I was in school. I have no problems helping my kids learn to read, write an essay or report, or even with spelling. Now Math and Science on the other hand – not my forte. Once they hit, I don’t know 6th grade, I’m pretty much no use to them when it comes to those subjects. So with a daughter heading into middle school, and another into high school, you can imagine how helpless I feel when they come to me with homework questions pertaining to either of those subjects!

That’s why I was thrilled to discover the Mentored app. Mentored is a safe, easy and affordable way to access an expert in Math, Science, Literature and more.

mentored_app

Mentored is an app that will give you student (or yourself!) 1 on 1 support with homework – anytime, anywhere. Sessions are $5 and can last up to 20 minutes  – plenty of time to answer your questions with homework, a project, or just help you understand something you weren’t grasping in class.

Mentored_choose_a_subject

It’s pretty simple – you sign up for an account via the app store, (or if you don’t have an iPhone, you can check it out on mentored.com). Then you pick the subject that you need mentored in – and they will connect you into a session with a ‘pro’.
My daughter is currently working on a very important Science Fair Project, and again, not quite the subject I’m well versed in. So she decided to connect with a Science Mentor on the app on her phone.

mentored_waiting_on_mentorOnce they assign you a mentor, you have the option of choosing to ‘talk’ to them via your phones microphone, or text on the app. If your kids are like mine (you know that awkward, teenage, I -don’t -talk -to- anyone- on- the- phone-or -in -public- unless-its-through-text-or-the-internet type of kid). So she denied the microphone access, and decided to type out her questions.

mentored_access_microphone

She didn’t want to share her conversation with her Mentor (it is a competitive Science Fair after all). But he helped her answer a few questions, and gave some suggestions for her project.

mentor_david

Since then she’s used the Mentored app twice to help with Math homework, and one more time for an additional question on her Science fair project. She absolutely loves being able to get her homework done when and where she needs to, without having to wait to ask someone who knows – who might be at work, or busy.

If you or someone you know struggles in school and can’t afford a one-on-one tutoring session, be sure to pass on the information for Mentoredan affordable way to connect.
