Tips for Getting (and Staying) Organized

Do you feel overwhelmed with all the things you have to do and remember? It seems with each day my memory gets worse and worse. I swear my boss, my husband, and even my Mom think that I am doing it on purpose, but I just feel…ell, overwhelmed. So as I was researching what could be wrong with me (and really I think it’s just stress) I found some great tips to help counter act the problems and be more efficient in my daily life.

Check Your Planner – 3x a Day

Planners are life savers. Getting into the habit of putting all your appointments and activities in a calender. Whether it be a day planner, a smartphone app, or a desk calender, WRITE IT DOWN! Keep it in one spot and check it at least 3x per day; make it a habit to check it on a regular schedule. Maybe first thing in the morning, after lunch, and then in the evenings. This will remind you of what you need to do – or were supposed to do – so it’s not completely forgotten.

Make a To Do List EVERY Day

Each day make a to do list of everything you need – and want – to get done that day. Make it realistic, arrange it in order of importance, and get them done in that order. Schedule your task for specific times each day so you can stay on schedule and check each task off as you go.

Start Organizing — One Room at a Time

Getting organized can be a life saver for the forgetfulness in your life. Getting things put away to where they belong – getting rid of stuff that you no longer need – can help keep the stress level down, and your life on track.

  • Tackle one room at a time — start with the easiest. Divide the room into sections if you need to.
  •  Schedule organization time in your planner. Use a timer to manage your work sessions.
  • Ask yourself whether you want to keep items or toss them. If you’re not sure, put them in a separate box to go through later.

Make Organization a DAILY Habit

“A place for everything, and everything in it’s place” is a great motto to live by. Have filing cabinets, labels, storage boxes, organizers. If you get it out – put it back. MAKE YOUR KIDS DO THE SAME (this is soo important). Take the last part of your night before bed to take 10 – 15 minutes to pick up, clean-up, and put things back. Have a box or tote for misc items that need filed or organized and go through those each week. If you keep up at it, it won’t snowball into a hot mess that you can’t get your foot on.

Have a Rotating Menu

Planning regular meals for the entire family may be a challenge. Create a “Top 10” dinner list or regular rotating menu of dishes that you can cook easily. Try to keep those ingredients on hand, or list the ingredients on index cards that you can take with you. Don’t carry the burden of feeding everyone yourself: Have a floating “free” night when you order takeout, or share the kitchen responsibilities with other family members. THIS IS A HUGE way you can help yourself , and keep your family organized and stress-free.

Use Electronic Reminders

I can’t tell you how setting an alarm for important events have been a life saver – and kept my kids from being mad that I forgot them at practice again (um, yes it’s happened). They have some great apps for your phone (or your computer) to help remind you of what needs done. This is also great for reminding yourself to take medication, remind you to make an important phone call, pick up your daughter at soccer!

Tune Out Distractions

Distractions while you are working make accomplishing anything at work really hard – especially with this great thing we call the internet.  Wait to check your e-mail until you get a few things from your to do list – set specific times you are checking it so that you don’t waste all day sitting in your inbox. Limit your web surfing to your lunch hour, or afternoon break. Put your cell phone away, or better yet, turn it off. Do one task at a time – studies actually show that you will not be as efficient in any task if you try to do more than one thing at a time.

Fight the Boredom

Many people with ADHD get bored easily — especially during routine tasks or paperwork. This can make it difficult to stay focused at work. Try these tips:

  • Break up big tasks into smaller tasks.
  • Between tasks, take a walk or get fresh air.
  • Take notes in meetings.

Simplify Your Life with Fewer Tasks

Organizing and simplifying your surroundings will help you reduce clutter, keep track of your belongings, and remove some of the distractions that prevent you from focusing. Simplifying can work for your schedule, too. Don’t start a new project or task until you’ve finished the current one. Try not to overschedule yourself with too many projects or tasks at once. You may need to practice saying no to new tasks to stay focused.

Get More Exercise

Though exercise won’t necessarily help you stay organized, it can help you channel extra energy. But regular exercise and team sports can also help you work together with others, learn to set and meet goals, and feel better about yourself. Some research suggests that physical activity may stimulate parts of the brain associated with ADHD. Activities like yoga and karate may be better for attention disorders because they offer opportunities for memorizing movements..

One of my favorite drinks is mike’s hard pink lemonade. What I love besides the great taste of mike’s hard pink lemonade, is I can actually sit back and relax – and support a great cause at the same time.

Almost after every soccer practice we make a pit stop at Circle K to get the kids a snack. It’s kind of a tradition, and it helps hold the kids over until I can get dinner made. I was so excited last week when I stopped by for our regularly visit and found that the mike’s hard pink lemonade special edition was back! I don’t drink often, but mike’s give me a reason to celebrate!

Breast cancer awareness/ and research is a matter very close to my heart. My Grandmother suffered from breast cancer, and it was not a easy thing for her – or our family – to go through. Though there have been great strides made in the past few decades, we can always do more. That’s what I love about mike’s.  Back in 2009 mike’s introduced their hard pink lemonade to support breast cancer awareness. Since then they’ve contributed more than $1 million dollars to breast cancer research.

DIY Tips to Painting Old Bathroom Tile

To me two of the most important rooms in your house are the kitchen and of course, the bathroom. These are rooms that we spent a lot of our time in, where our guest will visit at one time or another, a place we went to be proud of. I remember one of the houses we looked at when house hunting and one bathroom still had some pretty retro green tile on the floor and the walls. YUCK! Keeping our bathrooms updated & modern can get quite expensive especially if you are looking at replacing flooring, walls, and even tubs, toilets and sinks. But you can give your bathroom the make-over you desire without breaking the bank. Something as simple as an changing the tile, or updating the paint color or finish completely, or just adding smaller designs or accents to the tile, can give your bathroom a refreshing update.

Painting tile is not for the faint of heart though – this isn’t like painting the walls in your kitchen. It requires much greater attention to detail, considerable down time while the paint cures, (i.e, I hope you have another bathroom, or you’re going to be visiting your neighbors a few times a day) and ample ventilation. If you think your up to the challenge, here are a few tips to make your project a success.

bathroom_tile

No matter which method you choose, always start with extremely squeaky clean tile and use high quality primer, epoxy paint and brushes. Epoxy paint adheres to the surface and provides a smooth, waterproof coating that can stand up to a high humidity environment (i.e., hot, steamy showers!)

Open any windows and turn on the exhaust fan, if you have one. Place drop-cloths and apply masking tape to any areas you don’t want to want paint all over. I would highly recommend that even if you think that you are extra cautious to do this on everything (yes, I am speaking from experience). Then clean, clean, CLEAN! Rinse the ceramic tile thoroughly and dry it with a lint-free towel.

Sand like a crazy person.  With a DIY epoxy kit, your job is only going to be as good as the time you spend cleaning and sanding; a rough surface is your primary source of adhesion. DO NOT skimp on this step! You WILL be sorry if you do!  The better your prep, the more satisfied you will be. You don’t want to be doing your business, or worse yet, having a friend doing theirs, and look around to see what a shoddy job you did. Time & effort with this project are essential!

Wear a respirator mask and use a fan. Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate. Epoxy is vile stuff to breathe in. Wear rubber gloves. You don’t want this on you either!

Use a spray gun. Brushing and rolling can work, but a spray gun gives the best finish — use a pro-grade model if you can swing it.

Don’t use regular spray paint. It will look like your plastic lawn furniture that you let the kids paint last summer –  splurge for the good stuff! I promise it will be worth it. Also don’t use any type of water based paint either – you are painting a hot, steamy, wet bathroom…so use common sense

Don’t take a long, hot bath — at least not for a while. Follow instructions about how long the epoxy should cure before you use the tub, and if you can wait even longer, do. Some impatient painters end up with wrinkly surfaces – and a lot of frustration.

After you paint and update the tile, remember to accessorize! The right bathroom accessories can make or break your finished look.

5 Simple Ways to Remove a Stuck Screw

As I am going about my house working on getting each room cleaned, organized and updated I’ve started to feel really good about this big project that I’ve taken on.to have my house in order and not stress about all the things I need to get done. I’m spring cleaning in a way, which I am hoping with a consistent regiment of chores and days set aside for DIY projects each month (like making my own DIY cigar humidor), that I won’t have to stress or feel that my house is in shambles and I can take the time to relax and enjoy time with the kids. This past week I started the process in my kitchen, which is a huge project to take on. Our house was built in the 1800’s, so we have plaster walls instead of dry wall, and it drives me crazy! The walls don’t seem as polished and smooth as drywall and the worst part? Trying to hang anything. After 3 years in our house I finally decided that I needed to hang my cute kitchen curtains, the blinds alone were just not cutting it. I had procrastinated because the same exact project that I had taken on in the living room had taken me what felt like forever, and I hadn’t had the patience or time to worry about the kitchen.  As I began my project my heart sunk because I realized that someone else had previously tried to hang kitchen curtains as well – and failed miserably. There were at least a half a dozen broken, stuck, or painted over screws where I wanted to hang my curtain rod. So I took to the books (and the internet) to find the best ways to remove stuck screws and here’s what I found:

.how_to_remove_a_stuck_screw

1. Avoid making the problem worse. If the tool you are using is slipping, stop using it! If it continues to slip it will wear down the screw head and make it harder to remove (and maybe impossible). Make sure you are going in the correct direction – counterclockwise – and press down hard as you are unscrewing will help prevent slipping, and causing more damage.  Sometimes using a manual screwdriver instead of a power drill – not only to avoid making the screw or the wall more damaged -will exert more torque that you need to remove a recalcitrant screw. Some drills will actually lose their grip on the screwdriver bit if you put too much torque on them.

2.Use a screw extractor. The right tool for the job if the screw head is just worn, is called a screw extractor. This is essentially a screwdriver or screwdriver bit which has strong, rough metal threads right on the tip. These are intended to burrow into the metal of the screw head and get stuck there so you can put some torque on it. These worked great for the majority of the stuck nails in my wall. You can pick up some great screw extractor sets like the one I got on GotStock.com

3. The rubber band ‘trick’.  Often placing a broad, flat rubber band between the screw and the screwdriver will work if you put enough pressure on it, and rotate it slowly. The rubber band acts to fill in the space that the screwdriver cannot grip. (An alternative to a rubber band is a small piece of masking tape, whereby the adhesive side is pressed against the screw head)

4. Try a socket wrench. If you need a lot of torque because you are hurting your hand or you are not getting results you want, the best tool is a socket wrench. This gives you  6 inches or more of lever arm rather than the half-inch or so a screwdriver will give you. This majorly increases the amount of torque and pressure you can put on the screw.

5. As a last resort – drill it out. If all else fails, it is possible to drill out the screw with a power drill and bit the same size as the screw’s shaft. This should remove the  thread. From here you can try to replace the old screw with a screw of a slightly larger size, use nuts and bolts instead of the screw (this will entail some welding, which is wayy over my level of expertise).

I am far from an expert, but these tips helped me complete my project – and keep my sanity. What are your tips for removing stuck screws?
