Taking a Road Trip? Don’t forget these 3 Tire Safety Tips

This post brought to you by Sam’s Club . The content and opinions expressed below are that of All in a Day’s Work.

Before you load up the van with the kids, luggage, snacks, cooler and everything but the kitchen sink you need to make sure your vehicle is road trip worthy. Besides the standard oil & coolant check and making sure you have a full tank of gas, you need to take a closer look at your wheels. Tires don’t only affect road handling, but also the ride, braking, and safety. For the best performance tires must have the correct air pressure, balance, tread depth, and alignment.

Air Pressure – not having the correct air pressure can lead to flat tires, tire wear, and even blowouts.Too much air can cause the tires middle section to contact the road, which creates wear in the center tread and less wear on the edge. Under inflation will do the opposite. Be sure to purchase a trusted tire pressure gauge to avoid these problems.

Balance & Rotation – Making sure your tires are properly balanced helps minimize wear and extends the life of your tire. Making sure that your tires are balanced when purchasing new new tires is important, as well as whenever you notice a vibration. Tires typically should be rotated every 6 months or 6-8,000 miles.

Wheel Alignment –   Wheel alignment is the position of the wheels compared to specifications that the manufacturers recommend. Each vehicle has specific alignment settings. If the alignment measurement falls outside of a specific range, vehicle handling & fuel economy will be affected, as well as additional wear and tear on the tires. You will know that your cars tires are aligned properly when the vehicle will drive down the road in a straight line without drifting or pulling to either side. Drifting or pulling can cause more problems  than just alignment . It’s a good idea to have a professional take a look to avoid any further damages.

  • Those are great tips. We have a road trip coming up this weekend actually!

  • My husband triple checks our tires before every road trip. A blow out can be a hassle at the least. At worst, it can cause really horrendous accidents.

  • Great tips! We don't have a vehicle or drive but we go places with my sister in law often so this will be great to know and pass along to her!

  • This is so important. Always check the tire pressure and the treads. Small tears can be hard to notice.

  • This is so important. My husband always take our car in for a checkup before we go on a road trip. We will have to go to Sam's to have this done next time.

  • It's so important to get your car looked over before a road trip. You don't want to deal with it while on vacation.

  • My husband is a mechanic and always gives our vehicle a thorough checkup before any road trip. Reliable tires are so important for overall safety.

  • My tire alignment is probably so bad from all the potholes in the road! it's something I need looked at.
