I never gave much thought on taking extra measures to protect my belongings, besides locking my doors and flipping on the porch light. We live in a decent neighborhood, sure a car or two will be broken into (punk kids) but someone busting in and riffling through my belongings? Nah.
This past Thanksgiving my sister and her family went to visit her in-laws out of state and I was the bunny keeper. The bunny my nephew had received as an Easter present was now the size of a pretty fat cat, and he needed taken care of while they were gone. So the kids and I would stop after work and feed and water the bunny, check the mail and then head home every evening. Sunday they were supposed to be home, so I stopped by after church instead of waiting until the evening and took care of things so they wouldn’t have to worry. Boy was I wrong.
My sister called me in a panic, crying – they had gotten home about 8 p.m. to find someone smashed their kitchen window to get in the house, and ransacked it. I mean threw the Xbox (I don’t think they could get the cables disconnected from behind their big TV), messed up the Christmas tree, went through my sister’s closet, and even her drawers. A lot of the items they took were replaceable, and it was a blessing that my kids and I weren’t there when they broke in. But they took a few things that were my Grandpa’s that my sister got when he passed away, along with her class ring, and a few other sentimental jewelry items.
She’s spent a lot of time with “what if’s” and it got me thinking… Why wasn’t I protecting what I love?? What about all the people who were flooded in New Orleans, New York? People who face hurricanes, and all this horrific weather. Protecting what you love is so important!

Ugh so sorry for your sister... in this economy this is becoming the norm I am afraid. We know several people who have been broken into... such a violation.
Oh yeah.. when your house is robbed you feel so violated. Sadly we have dealt with this more than once.
Oh my gosh. That is so scary. Protect what you love. And also, I might need a Bunny Keeper soon! haha. Do you travel??
