Identity Theft: YES it Can Happen to You!

This is a sponsored post on behalf of LifeLock. Though I was compensated for my time, all opinions are my own.

I have worked in the insurance industry for over 10 years, and in those years I have seen a lot of crazy stuff. People opening their door during a car wash ripping the door completely off the hinges (and no, he couldn’t remember why), wanting the company to pay for the T.V. they broke during a game of Wii Sports, and a lady convinced that her neighbor was trying to off her by coming in her house and moving things around (yes, I’m not sure how I could of helped either!) I’ve also seen a lot of sad things as well – houses burnt to the ground, people loosing family in car accidents, and I’ve seen a TON of people become aware that their identity had been stolen.

One particular story I remember is a man who called my office with the opening line of, “you are never going to believe this, but..” I have heard that line a few times in my career, but this one takes the cake. This gentlemen went on to tell me that his old roommate from many years ago had stolen his identity – and he had been working feverishly the past 5 years to get it back. The reason he was calling me was because this identity theft had just bought a home and auto insurance policy with me – and we were completely unaware that he wasn’t who he said he was. The gentleman actually received a letter from our company stating that someone had used his information and alerted him to call our office if it wasn’t him – he called me, unsure what to do. He had been making police reports, reported to the credit bureau, but somehow his old roommate was able to buy a house with his identity!

I remember being a bit scared through the process of helping him file the right reports, and do what we could to help him find the perpetrator and reclaim his identity.  I mean, weren’t we all well beyond this? I thought the world was more technologically advanced than this? It really could happen to anyone.

I knew I needed to do something to not only protect my identity, but my husband’s as well. We had worked very hard to recover our credit after our previous relationships, and I wasn’t going to let someone steal all my hard work! So I did a search and ran across the  LifeLock Site . What a life saver!

  • Identity theft scares me - especially if someone gets in and takes my debit card number & then I could potentially not be able to access my money!

  • Oh my! I couldn't imagine what that poor gentleman went through with his old roommate. It's so scary that there aren't a lot of ways that people can be protected from this... It's great that LifeLock can help! Such a useful and important service!

  • IT so scary to think about and it happens way too often. I've had it happen to too may friends.

  • I've seen the commercials for this. How scary to possibly lose everything! Thanks for the info

  • My brother had his stolen last year. Thankfully he works for the government, so they couldn't really do a lot with it!

  • Identity theft is so scary. I can't believe someone was able to buy a HOUSE under someone else's name! LifeLock sounds pretty amazing (and I'm definitely checking it out.)

  • Wow, that is a scary story! You would think, in this day and age, it would be impossible for someone to buy a home while posing as another person. Identity theft protection is SO important!

  • I have heard of Life Lock for several so this company must be very reliable. I'm always amazed at what people will do.. you 'd think if they are smart enough to steal an identity that they would use that smart to go to school and make some money.
